Vernon Evenson

Vernon H. Evenson, 77, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Friday, Dec. 10, 1999, at the Oneota Riverview Care Facility in Decorah, following a lengthy illness.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Dec. 14, at 11 a.m., at the French & Balik Funeral Home in Decorah, with the Rev. David Andreae of Big Canoe Lutheran Church in rural Decorah officiating.

Burial will be at the Lincoln Cemetery, Ridgeway. The French & Balik Funeral Home in Decorah is handling arrangements.

Visitation will be held at the church Tuesday beginning at 9:30 a.m.

Vernon was born Feb. 26, 1922, in Ridgeway, the son of Harry and Sena (Bersager) Evenson. He attended country schools near Ridgeway.

He worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps around Decorah, worked as a farmhand and helping with the harvest in North and South Dakota in his younger years.

He lived in Cedar Rapids for 50 years doing construction work and helping as a brick tender. He was known for his honesty.

Survivors include nieces and nephews, La Vonne and Jack Bussey of Sacramento, Calif., Lyle and Helen Stegen of Decorah, Dorothy and Dave Christen of Wadena, Arlan and Lois Stegen of Cedar Rapids, and Arla Schmidt of Independence; and several great-nieces and nephews.

Vernon Evenson was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Otto; his sister Mabel Stegen, who died in 1998; one nephew, Ron Stegen in 1998; and a great-niece, Lila Stegen Hanson in 1997.
