Duane 'Zip' Sauser

Duane "Zip" Sauser, 86, died Thursday, Sept. 21, 2000, at the Mercy Health, Center in New Hampton.

Funeral services were held Monday, Sept. 25, at 11 a.m., at the United Methodist Church in Calmar. Officiating were Letha Rogers and the Rev. Jeff Scherer.

Don Nelson was the pianist. Matthew Strum was the soloist.

Casket bearers were Derek Sauser, Nathan Sauser, Tim Vondersitt, Don Kubesh, Drew Sauser and Dale Hogenson.

Honorary bearers were Gil Egge, Ray Staley, Tony Sauer, Joe McCasland, Lyhn Daker, Larry Frana, Francis Meyer and Dr. Garfield Miller.

The military honor guard included members of the Calmar American Legion Halverson-Giesen Post No. 266.

Interment was at the Calmar City Cemetery. The French Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Duane Frederick Sauser was born May 30, 1914, in Prairieburg, the son of Paul and Orpha (Schoonover) Sauser. He graduated from Coggon High School in l932. From 1932 until 1941, he worked at the Sauser Hardware Store in Manchester with his father.

In 1942, he enlisted in the United States Navy where he spent time at the Great Lakes and in the Panama Canal until his discharge Aug. 19, 1945.

Zip married Uarda (Dewey) Daniels April 18, 1942, in Manchester. To this union two sons were born, Gary and Tom.

In 1946, they started Sauser Hardware in Calmar, which they ran for 35 years, until Jan. 1, 1980.

Zip was a member of the Calmar United Methodist Church, the Calmar American Legion Halverson-Giesen Post. No. 266, the True Value Hardware Corp., the Calmar Commercial Club, the South Winneshiek Golf & Country Club and he was a charter member of the Calmar Lions Club.

He liked to keep busy with woodworking projects, golfing, traveling, reading and his grandchildren.

Survivors include two sons, Gary Sauser of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, and Tom and Barb Sauser of New Hampton; four grandchildren, Nathan Sauser of Des Moines,, Katie Sauser of Scottsdale, Ariz., Drew Sauser of Cedar Falls and Derek Sauser of Casselberry, Fla.; one brother, Alec and Edna Sauser of Ryan; and one sister, Edith Conklin of Central City.

Duane "Zip" Sauser was preceded in death by his wife, Uarda, who died, in 1995, and by his parents.
