LeRoy Schmidt

LeRoy Arthur Schmidt, 86, of Waukon, died Sunday, June 4, 2000, at the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon, where he and his wife, Dorothy, had been living for three months.

Funeral services were held Saturday, June 10, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon, with the Rev. Lynn Groe officiating.

Special music was provided by the Rev. James and Laurie Klosterboer, Jesse and Sara of Elkader.

Casket bearers were his grandsons Eric Richardson and Rolf Richardson, and nephews James Johnson, James Klosterboer, John Klosterboer and Jesse Klosterboer.

Interment was at the Oakland Cemetery in Waukon.

LeRoy was born in St. Olaf Aug. 18, 1913, the son of Arthur Schmidt and Lucy (Klinkenberg) Schmidt. He grew up in the St. Olaf area of Clayton County, attending St. Olaf Elementary School, Farmersburg High School, Elkader Junior College and Iowa State University in Ames.

On May 16, 1934, LeRoy married Dorothy Walter at St. John's Lutheran Church in Farmersburg. To this union two daughters were born: Patricia and Corine.

On May 16, 2000, the Schmidts celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary.

LeRoy and Dorothy farmed near St. Olaf and in Jefferson Township of Allamakee County for 57 years, moving to Waukon in 1991. Dorothy taught school in Clayton county, Waterville and Waukon.

The Schmidts were longtime members of St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon. They were active in the congregation, giving of their time, talents
and treasures. They sang in the church choir for 40 years. LeRoy also was a member of the Barbershop Chorus.

LeRoy and Dorothy enjoyed traveling and took trips all over the United States and Europe. They spent winters in Donna, Texas, escaping the cold winters of Iowa.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Schmidt, of Waukon; two daughters, Patricia Richardson of Winfield, IL. and Corrie Schmidt of Manson, Wash; two grandchildren, Eric and DeAnn Richardson and Rolf and Laurie Richardson; four great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Lurene Walter of Postville and Florene Klosterboer of DECORAH; one brother-in-law, Ma Lloyd Mueller of Elkader; and many other relatives and friends.

LeRoy Schmidt was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Helen Johnson; and one son-in-law, Dar Richardson.
