Luther Groth

Luther Groth, 94, of Decorah, died Thursday, May 18, 2000, at the Aase Haugen Home.

Funeral services were held Monday, May 22, at 11 a.m., at the Highland Lutheran Church, rural Spring Grove, Minn., with the Rev. David Andreae officiating.

Burial was at the church cemetery. The Mengis Funeral Home of Mabel, Minn., handled arrangements.

Luther was born April 12, 1906, in Post Township of Allamakee County, the son of Ernest and Augusta (Kempke) Groth. He attended Postville High School.

On Oct. 28, 1926, he was married to Julia Larson in Postville. They moved to the rural Spring Grove, Minn., area where he farmed and in the 1930s started buying cattle. He continue to buy cattle until 1991.

Julia died March 4, 1963. On Sept. 30, 1966, he married Ruth Livingood. She died April 17, 1993.

Around that same time, Luther became a resident at the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah and had resided there since.

Survivors include three sons, Kenneth of Decorah, Keith (Rita) and Duane (Shirley), both of rural Spring Grove, Minn.; two daughters, Norma (Mrs. Donald) Halse of Decorah and Ila Barnes of Rochester, Minn.; two step sons, Rodney (Carolyn) Livingood of Postville and Dale (Liz) Livingood of Oelwein; 20 grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; one sister, Ruth Archer of Mesa, Ariz.; and several nieces and nephews.

Luther Groth was preceded in death by his first wife, Julia; his second wife, Ruth; four brothers, Fred, Art, Harold and Walter; and one sister, Esther.
