Ethel Holthaus

Ethel A. Holthaus, 76, of Ossian died Friday, Oct. 13 at Ossian Senior Hospice following a lengthy illness.

Ethel Anita Holthaus was born Jutle 26, 1924 near Ossian, the daughter of Nicholas and Anna (Schmitz) Schissel. She attended country schools and St. Francis DeSales Catholic School.

She married August Holthaus on June 26, 1941 at St. Francis DeSales Catholic Church in Ossian.

Ethel Holthaus was a well-known cake decorator for 40 years, making many cakes for anniversaries, weddings and birthdays. Ethel enjoyed playing cards, going to the casino, bingo and gardening.

She was a member of Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church, the rosary society and CDA.

Survivors include her husband, August Holthaus of Ossian; a daughter, Betty Larson and husband Jim of West Union; two sons, Clifford Holthaus and wife Lois of Decorah and August "Junior" Holthaus of Ossian; two daughters-in-law, Vernelle Holthaus of Hawkeye and Bernice Holthaus of West Union; and one sister, Caroline Lechtenberg of Ossian.

She had 21 grandchildren: Lori Holthaus, Leslie Becker, Gary Holthaus, Kelly Holthaus, Lynn Holthaus, Marcus Holthaus, Travis Holthaus, Todd Holthaus, Wendy Schmeideler, Chris Holthaus, Amy Zweibohmer, Brian Zweibohmer, Mark Zweibohmer, Jeremy Larson, Troy Larson, Cheri Larson, Michael Larson, Chad Holthaus, Eric Holthaus, Ryan Holthaus and Justin Holthaus.

There are five great grandchildren: Samantha, Daphne and Jonathan Barness, Jason Holthaus and Colton Larson, and several nieces and nephews.
