James Austad

James "Jim" Austad, 71, of Cleveland, Tenn. for the past 12 years, died Wednesday, April 21, 1999, at his home.

Memorial services were conducted Monday, April 26, at 11 a.m., at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Newton, with the Reece Funeral Home of Newton and the Fike Funeral Home of Cleveland, Tenn., in charge of local arrangements.

James was born Oct. 31, 1927, in DECORAH, the son of George and Clara (Poshusta) Austad. He was a graduate of DECORAH High School and the University of Iowa, where he was a member of the Phi Kappa Alpha fraternity, the President's Club and the Dean's Club.

He had been general service manager with the Maytag Co. in Newton and served as the director of customer relations with the Maytag Co. in Cleveland, Tenn.

James had served on the Newton Park Board from 1968-70, the City Council from 1970-87, and was Mayor.

He also was a member of the Broad Street United Methodist Church and was a former member of the Congregational United Church of Christ, where he had served as youth advisor, trustee and moderator.

James had been active in the Boy Scouts of America, Little League, Community Chest, Maytag Management Club and the Kiwanis. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving in the Korean war.

Survivors include his wife, Joanne (Snyder) Austad, whom he married May 29, 1957; two daughters, Jackie Austad of Omaha, Neb., and Jolie Austad Patterson and Dr. Brian Patterson of Indianapolis, Ind.; one son, James and Seressa Austad of Cleveland; grandchildren Callie Austad, James Austad and Jamie Patterson; one brother, John Austad of Cedar Rapids; one sister, Jeneen Huffman of New Hampton; and several nieces and nephews.
