Zephie Shileny

Zephie Shileny, 91, of Lawler, died Thursday, April 15, 1999, at the New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center of natural causes.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, April 19, at 11 a.m., at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Lawler, with the Rev. Pete Bodensteiner celebrating the mass.

The pall was placed on the casket by her four children. Lector was Laura Reicks. Music for the mass was provided by Verda Mikota as organist, and Colleen Busta and Harlan Mikota as vocalists.

Casket bearers were John Shileny, Dennis Shileny, Gerry Shileny, Donald Shileny, Joseph Shileny, Randy Kuennen, Jim Kuennen, Ken Kuennen and Gary Kuennen, all grandsons.

Interment was in the church cemetery. The Larkin-Martin-Hugeback Funeral Home in Lawler handled arrangements.

Zephie (Bouska) Shileny was born Dec. 13, 1907, in rural Winneshiek County, the daughter of Charles and Eleanor (Novak) Bouska.

On Oct. 28, 1924, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville, she married Joseph S. Shileny. Together they farmed six miles north of Lawler, moving into Lawler in 1978.

Memberships included the Lawler Legion Auxiliary, the Turkey Ridge Seniors and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. Zephie enjoyed crocheting, playing cards, baseball and baking kolaches.

Survivors include two daughters, Eleanor Dostal and Mary Ann Kuennen, both of Lawler; two sons, Julius and Loretta Shileny of Protivin, and Norbert and Delores Shileny of New Hampton; 20 grandchildren; 44 grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Louisa Panosh of Belle Plaine.

Zephie Shileny was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Joseph, who died June 15, 1990; a grandson and great-granddaughter, both in infancy; two sons-in-law, Joseph Dostal and Delbert Kuennen; one brother, Leo Bouska; and three sisters, Eleanora Loesch, Martha Hadacek and Gertrude Bouska.
