Herbert Joseph Einck

Herbert Joseph Einck, 84, of Decorah, died Friday, March 31, 2000, at the Aase Haugen Home following a lengthy illness.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 5, at 11 a.m., at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Decorah, with the Rev. Gary Krapfl officiating.

Organist was Alan Sensor and the cantor was Joan Schissel. Songs were "Here I Am Lord," "Be Not Afraid," "On Eagle's Wings," '"Let There Be
Peace on Earth" and "Battle Hymn of the Republic."

Casket bearers were Shawn, Brad, Jordan, Russell, Shane and Justin Einck.

Burial was at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Cemetery, Festina. Full military rites at the graveside were given by the Helof Holm V.F.W. Post No. 1977 and the American Legion Post No. 163.

The French & Balik Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Visitation included a Foresters/Catholic Daughters of America rosary.

Herbert was born Feb. 17,1916, in Greenwood, Wis., the son of Joseph and Catherine (Huinker) Einck. At a very young age, Herbert moved with his family to Festina, where he attended Our Lady of Seven Dolors school.

Herb enlisted in the United States Army, serving in World War II from October of 1942 until July of 1945, receiving a Purple Heart.

Herb returned to Festina and married Winnifred (Freda) Bucheit Jan. 29, 1946, at Our Lady of Seven Dolors

Catholic Church. To this union seven sons were born: Gerald, Ray, Joseph, Dennis, Leon, Norman and Kenneth.

Herb operated Einck's DX Service Station in Festina, for 28 years, passing the business on to his sons when he moved to Decorah in 1983.

Hobbies included bowling and fishing. Herb was a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church in Decorah and formerly Our Lady of Seven Dolors in Festina.

He was a lifelong member of the Catholic Order of the Foresters. Also, he was a member of the Helof Holm V.F.W. Post. No. 1977 and the American Legion Post No. 163.

Survivors include his wife, Winnifred "Freda" Einck of Decorah; six sons, Gerald and Beth Einck of Decorah, Ray and Judy Einck of Aurora,
Colo., Dennis and Kathy Einck of Wabasha, Minn., Leon and Nancy Einck of Decorah, Norman and Cindy Einck of West Union, and Kenneth and Sue Einck of Festina; 19 grandchildren; two sisters, Rose and Loren Nathern of Oelwein, and Lorraine and Hugo Schrandt of Festina; and four brothers: Jerome and Rita Einck of Waucoma, Leander Einck of Calmar, Leo and Bernice Einck of Waterloo, and Leroy and Deanna Einck of Elgin, Minn.

Herbert Einck was preceded in death by his parents; his son Joseph Einck; two grandchildren; Brenda and Brian; his brother, Edwin Einck; his sister Helen Ott; and two sisters-in-law, Irene Einck and Adela Einck.
