MELVIN A. (Mel) PETERSON, 85, of Ossian, died Saturday, April 3, 1999 of a lengthy illness at the Ossian Senior Hospice in Ossian.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, April 7 at 11 a.m. at the Ossian Lutheran Church with visitation at the church one hour prior to service time.

Interment will be in Albert City, Iowa cemetery. Schmitz Funeral Home of Ossian is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include one son, Rev. Jack Peterson of Emmetsburg, and one daughter, Geilda (Jill) Peterson of Cedar Rapids.

Melvin (Mel) A. Peterson of Ossian died Saturday morning, April 3, 1999, at the Ossian Senior Hospice in Ossian after a lengthy illness. He was 85.

Mel was born the son of the late John and Edna (Lundeen) Peterson on Jan. 17, 1914, at Storm Lake, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed in his faith at Storm Lake where he also received his education.

After graduation, he began his life's career in restaurants and supper clubs which he owned or was employed as a chef. He later moved to California where he continued employment as a chef.

Upon his retirement in 1981, he moved to Ossian, Iowa, to be near his son Jack and family. In 1994 he became a resident at the Ossian Senior Hospice.

Since Mel was 10 years old, he was an avid stamp collector. Later, he became a stamp dealer. He also enjoyed watching sports and was a fan of the Chicago Cubs baseball team and the Iowa Hawkeye basketball and football teams.

Melvin was a member of the Ossian Lutheran Church in Ossian and a former member of the American Philatelic Society.

Survivors include a son, the Rev. Jack Peterson and his wife, Mary of Emmetsburg, Iowa; a daughter, Geilda (Jill) Peterson of Cedar Rapids; four grandchildren, Dr. Daniel Peterson and his wife, Michelle, of Sheboygan, Wis.;
Amy and her husband, Brad Dunnun of Grand Rapids, Mich.; Zachariah Peterson and Benjamin Peterson, both of Emmetsburg.

Also surviving are a brother, Jack H. Peterson and his wife, Winifred of Tucson, Ariz.; two sisters, Denise Hjelle of Glenwood; and Eunice and her husband, Don Main of Storm Lake; and numerous nephews and nieces.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Peggy; a sister, Marian Rohling; and two brothers-in-law, Arnold Hjelle and William Rohling.

Visitation was Wednesday, April 7, and a memorial service was held Wednesday, April 7, at Ossian Lutheran Church in Ossian. The officiating clergyman was the Rev. Wayne Ellingson. Elaine Knutson was the organist.

Inurnment was at the Albert City, Iowa, cemetery.
