Howard Gossman

Howard E. Gossman, 68, of Whalan, Minn., died Sunday, June 11, 2000, at the Methodist Hospital in Rochester, Minn., after a short illness.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 15, at 10:30 a.m., at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lanesboro, Minn., with the Rev. Thomas Loomis officiating.

Casket bearers will be his six brothers. Burial will be at the church cemetery. Graveside services will be conducted by the American Legion Post No. 400 of Canton, Minn.

The Johnson-Riley Funeral Home of Lanesboro is handling arrangements. Visitation will be held Thursday, one hour before service time at the church.

Howard was born March 3, 1932 at Cresco, the son of Francis J. and Mae (Ryan) Gossman. He graduated from Canton (Minn.) High School.

On Oct. 19, 1958, he was united in marriage with Opal Schrautemier in Bend, Ore.

Howard lived in rural Canton until 1950 when he served in the United States Army and in Korea. A stay at Madras, Ore., followed that.

In 1959 he moved to Harmony, Minn. and in 1962 to Whalan, Minn.

Survivors include his wife, Opal; three sons, Thomas Gossman of Whalan, Minn; Randy and Lisa Gossman of Canton, Minn., and Bob and Sheila Gossman of Preston, Minn; four daughters, Debra and David Thompson of Norfolk, Va., Janice Stoneburg of Winona, Minn., Connie and Mike Thedens of Elgin, Minn., and Kristi and Dan Ruesink of Cherry Grove, Minn.; 17 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are six brother and three sisters: Wayne and Vivienne Gossman of Decorah, Lloyd and Colleen Gossman of Mabel, Minn., Merlyn and Vernelle Gossman of Decorah, Harold and Marci Gossman of Tucson, Ariz., Roman and Mercedes Gossman of Rose Creek, Minn., Jean and Jim McCabe of Kirksville, Mo., Wanda and Ralph Milligan of Bluffton, and Margo and Bruce Kroshus of Oronoco, Minn.

Howard Gossman was preceded in death by his parents, two sons, one daughter, two grandsons and one son-in-law.
