Mabel Wangsness

Mabel Wangsness, 87, of Calmar, died Saturday, Sept. 11, 1999 at the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital after a short illness.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Sept. 15, at 11 a.m., at the Calmar Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Paul Gunderson officiating.

Al Sensor was the organist. Daryl Luzum sang a solo, "Just a Closer Walk With Thee." The congregation sang "Amazing Grace," "What A Friend We Have in Jesus" and "How Great Thou Art."

Casket bearers were Greg Drew, Jim Hillesland, Troy Wangsness, Alex Fjelstad, Mike Hillesland, Kent Wangsness, Bruce Gilbert, Erik Wangsness and Steve Wangsness.

Interment was at the Calmar Lutheran Cemetery. The French Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Mabel Evelyn (Hovden) Wangsness was born May 2, 1912, in Mahnomen, Minn., the daughter of Knut and Thea (Severson) Hovden.

She was baptized in St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Faith, Minn., by the Rev. N. Nordby. Mabel came to Iowa with her parents in 1919.

She was confirmed by the Rev. D.C. Jordahl at Madison Lutheran Church and attended Winneshiek County Schools.

Mabel was married to Clifford Wangsness April 2, 1930, at Washington Prairie Lutheran Church by the Rev. Paul Koren.

Mabel was a pastry baker for many years and was especially well known for her family favorites - doughnuts and cinnamon rolls.

She was a member of Calmar Lutheran Church for 69 years. She was active in WELCA and other church activities. For several years Clifford and Mabel served as custodians of Calmar Lutheran.

Mabel was fondly known as "Nanny" to a host of relatives and friends.

Survivors include four children, Colleen and Joseph Fjelstad of St. Louis Park, Minn., Goldie Mae and Harvey Hillesland of Calmar, Darryl and Carol Wangsness of Anoka, Minn., and Charles and Lorrie Wangsness of Sun Lakes, Ariz.; and 11 grandchildren and their spouses, Sandra and Bruce Gilbert of Plymouth, Minn., Alex and Susan Fjelstad of Minnetonka, Minn., James and Susan Hillesland of Lisle, IL., Barbara and Greg Drew of Manchester, Mike Hillesland of Elkader, Erik and Kari Wangsness of Denver, Colo., Steve Wangsness of Minneapolis, Minn., Kent and Molly Wangsness of Mendota Heights, Minn., Anne Wangsness of Eden Prairie, Minn., Troy and Janel Wangsness of Chandler, Ariz., and Traci Wangsness of Chandler, Ariz.

There are also 17 great grandchildren and one great-great-grandson; one sister, Gladys Usgaard of Decorah; one sister-in-law, Elva Rooney of Rochester, Minn.; two brothers-in-law and their spouses, Ervin and Lorraine Wangsness of Calmar, and Ted and Olga Wangsness of Decorah and many nieces and nephews.

Mabel was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford, on March 18, 1999; her parents; one sister, Aleda (Mrs. Oran) Hove; four brothers, Karmen, Casper, Arthur and Edwin Hovden; and a grandson, Kenny Humpal.
