Leonard Hoey

Leonard Hoey, 86, of Lawler and formerly of Waucoma, died Sunday, Feb. 14, 1999, at the New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center of natural causes.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, Feb. 16, at 10:30 a.m., at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Lawler, with the Rev. Marvin Salz celebrating the mass.

Lector for the services will be nephew Joe Scally.

Casket bearers will be grandsons Kevin Hoey, Scott Hoey, David Riha, Christopher Hoey, John Eckenrod, Travis Wurzer and Keith Hoey.

Honorary bearers will be grandsons Thomas Hoey, Jr., Brian Hoey, Ryan Hoey, Timothy Hoey, Mark Hoey, Jason Hoey and Michael Hoey.

Burial will be at the St. Rose Cemetery of rural Waucoma. The Larkin-Martin-Hugeback Funeral Home is handing arrangements.

Leonard William Hoey was born Feb. 22, 1912, in Jackson Township of Winneshiek County, the son of Thomas and Sarah (Kelly) Hoey. He attended St. Mary's Grade School and graduated from Waucoma High School in 1931.

On June 15, 1936, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Lawler, he married Edna Shepherd.

Leonard farmed west of Jackson Junction until 1976. During part of this time, he also was street commissioner for Jackson Junction.

He had been a former member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Waucoma and currently had been a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Lawler.

Survivors include his wife, Edna; four sons, Thomas and Mary Anne Hoey of West Union, Patrick and Mary Ann Hoey of New Hampton, William and Kathy Hoey of New Hampton, and James and Elaine Hoey of Waucoma; two daughters, Regina and Francis Riha of Waucoma, and Mary Jane and Ronald Eckenrod of New Hampton; a son-in-law, Wayne Wurzer of Solon; 26 grandchildren; and 19 greatgrandchildren.

Leonard Hoey was preceded in death, by his parents; one brother, Anthony Hoey, and six brothers in infancy; a daughter, Sally Wurzer; and two grandchildren, Karen Hoey and Todd Hoey.
