Arthur Linderbaum

Arthur Linderbaum, 93, of Ossian, died Friday, June 29, 2001 at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, Wis., following a short illness.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 3 at 2 p.m. at Stavanger Lutheran, Church in Ossian with Rev. David Lenth officiating.

Organist was Elaine Knutson and selected hymns included "Precious Lord, Take My Hand," "Just As I Am, Without One Plea" and "How Great Thou Art."

Casket bearers were Lew Bishop, Greg Wenthold, Bill Baskerville, Leslie Lauer, Kenneth Zajicek and Francis Wenthold.

Honorary casket bearers were Bob Converse, Robert Finck, Fidelis Schmitt, Robert Heckmann, Frederick Scheidel, Leo Elsbernd, Robert Henning,
Francis Franzen, Kenneth Anfinson and Marvin Youngblood.

Committal was in the Pleasant View Cemetery in Castalia. Schmitz Funeral Home of Ossian handled arrangements.

Arthur Frank Linderbaum was born Sept. 10, 1907 to Charles, Sr, and Alma Pliester Linderbaum in Bloomfield Township, Winneshiek County, near Castalia.

He was baptized Nov. 12, 1907 in St. Paul's Lutheran Church at Postville and confirmed Aug. 19, 1938 in the Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia by Rev. William Striepe.

He obtained his education in the rural schools in Bloomfield Township. He went to work at age 12, carrying two five gallon pails of maple sap for the Caldow Brothers Sugar Bush for 50 cents a day in order to help with family finances.

Arthur Linderbaum and his brother, Carl Linderbaum, also cut down trees for firewood, which was sold for 75 cents a cord.

On June 3, 1930 he went into business in Ossian as a car salesman in the Linderbaum Auto Company.

His calling, however, was repair work as a machinist and welder. He was ambitious and enjoyed his work.

He also liked socializing with family and friends, playing cards and playing the fiddle for barn dances and for his own enjoyment.

Rev. William Striepe united him in marriage Feb. 16, 1939 to Frieda Marie Ihde in the Zion Lutheran Parsonage in Castalia.

To this union two children were born: Eleanor Jo Ann and Darwin Richard.

Arthur Linderbaum was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia from 1938 to 1954 and he served on its church council. He was a member of the Ossian Lutheran Church from 1954-1982 and a member of the Stavanger Lutheran Church from 1982 until his death.

He had been a member of the Masonic Lodge #204 in Postville since April 1934.

One of the highlights of Arthur Linderbaum's life was being the Grand Marshall of the Ossian Sesquicentennial Parade in June 2000.

Survivors include his wife Frieda Linderbaum; his children: Eleanor and Robert Drew and Darwin and Cindy Linderbaum, all of Ossian; two grandchildren; two brother, Charles Linderbaum of Castalia; and Lawrence Linderbaum of' Monona; two sisters, Jennie Clement and Alma Burreson, both of Decorah; four sisters-in-law: Esther Linderbaum and Marie Linderbaum, both of Ossian; Marian Linderbaum of Castalia and Evelyn Linderbaum of Monona and numerous nieces and nephews.

Arthur Frank Linderbaum was preceded in death by his mother in 1946; his father in 1962; brothers and sisters Clara Cutting in 1960; Earl Linderbaum in 1984; Walter Linderbaum in 1985; Carl Linderbaum in 1986; Lydia Cook in 1987; Edward Linderbaum in 1998 and Elise Hughes in 1999.
