LaVerna Schopp

LaVerna Schopp, 85, of Waukon, died Tuesday, June 19, 2001 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon.

Funeral services were held Friday, June 22 at 11 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia with Rev. Dave Lenth officiating.

Casket bearers were Tim Irvine, John Friederich, Lyle Kneeskern, Larry Brockway, Donald Schnuelle and Clinton Schnuelle.

Burial was in the Pleasant View Cemetery in Castalia. The Schutte Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Postville handled arrangements.

LaVema Mathilda Maria (Reincke) Schopp was born June 19, 1916 in Linton Township, Allamakee County, near Waterville.

She was the first of six children born to Frederick Reincke and Louise Appel Reincke.

She was baptized August 27, 1916 in St. Paul Lutheran Church in Monona and confirmed Sept. 7, 1930 by Rev. G. A. Schmidt. She attended rural schools of Winneshiek County.

On Oct. 15, 1936 she married Melbert Schopp in the parsonage of St. John's Church in Farmersburg.

Following their marriage, they moved to the Castalia area, where Melbert Schopp worked as a farmhand and a truck driver.

LaVerna Schopp was always there, to help her husband, and they later opened and operated the Castalia Locker.

LaVerna Schopp had been a member of the Postville Good Samaritan Center for several months.

She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia and the Women of the ELCA.

She enjoyed playing cards, dancing, fishing and bowling and received several bowling awards and was inducted into the Bowling Hall of Fame.

Survivors include two brothers, Delbert and Joyce Reincke of Waterloo and Fred and Mabel Reincke of Albuquerque, N.M., several nieces and nephews and many friends.

LaVerna Mathilda Maria (Reincke) Schopp was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Melbert Schopp July 8, 1993; one brother, Arno Reincke and two sisters, Mardella (Wilbur) Reckward and Arlene (Marlin) Lundt.
