Donald Smock

Donald W. Smock, CSI United States Navy Retired, of Coronado, Calif., died at his home Sept 24, 1999, at the age of 73.

Honor guard and interment was held at the Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery at Point Loma, Calif., Oct. 4, 1999.

Donald was born in Decorah March 22, 1926, the son of Lester and Ida (Pushor) Smock.

He was married to Audrey Roney May 30, 1947. They had celebrated their 52nd anniversary last May.

Don joined the Navy April 4, 1943, and retired after serving 24 years. He then went to work for the Civil Service as a cook in the General Mess at 32nd Street in San Diego for another 13 years and retired March 22, 1981.

Don served on several ships, mostly aircraft carriers. During World War II he was mostly on the Carrier U.S.S. White Plains, which was in five major battles, including the Battle of Leyte Gulf, also in the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He retired from the Navy Aug. 11, 1966, at Great Lakes, IL.

Don was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1977 in Decorah. He also was a member of Fleet Reserve Association and D.A.V.

Survivors include his wife, Audrey; two sons, Ronald Smock of San Diego, and Major Dennis Smock, U.S.M.C. Retired of Stafford, Va.; four grandchildren, Brian Smock, Kyle Smock, Matthew Smock and Sarah Smock; one great-grandchild; and three sisters, Mrs. Robert Gilbertson of Decorah, Mrs. Lyle Numedahl of Calmar, and Shirley Forsica of Rock Island, IL.

Donald Smock was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Elmer, Bernell and Richard Smock.
