Grant Jewell Barth

Grant J. Barth, 79, of Decorah, died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 1999, at Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 21, at 11 a.m., at the Decorah Lutheran Church, with the Revs. James Glesne, Tim Tostengard and O. Paul Haugen officiating.

Casket bearers will be Jim Frederick, Gary Frye, Norman Hjelmeland, John Lillegraven, Paul Rilling and Richard Roher.

Burial will be at Springwater Cemetery, rural Decorah.

The Fjelstul Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Visitation will be held Thursday after 10 a.m. at the church.

An Oddfellows memorial service also was held.

Grant Jewell Barth was born Oct. 10, 1919, in Winneshiek County, the son of Roy and Nellie (Buer) Barth. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church in Locust.

He had two sisters, June Anderson and Rosemar Rilling, both of Decorah.

Grant was united in marriage with Vivian Erickson Nov. 5, 1939, at St. John's Lutheran, Locust. Grant and Vivian had made their home in or near Decorah since marriage.

Since April of 1996, Grant had been a resident of Aase Haugen Home in Decorah.

Grant was a self-employed carpenter for many years. He also worked for L. C. Bolson Co. for many years.

Later, Grant and Vivian operated the A & W Drive-In of Decorah.

In the 1960's they purchased Ronnie's Cafe, a popular restaurant in Decorah. They ran the restaurant for 26 years.

Grant was a member of Decorah Lutheran Church. He was a board member for Springwater Church and Cemetery for many years.

Survivors include his wife, Vivian; one daughter, Norma and Dale Lundy of Decorah; and five sons, Glendon Barth, Gary Barth, Duane Barth, Terry and Kathy Barth of Waukon, and Daryl and Shelly Barth of Blythwood, S. C.

Also surviving are five grandchildren, Suzanne and Lyle Taylor of Spring Valley, Minn., Krisanne and Craig Nelson of Rochester, Minn., and Andrea of Hoffman Estates, Illinois, Sara of Madison, Wis., and Kari of Minneapolis, Minn., daughters of Daryl and Shelly Barth; three great-grandchildren, Michael, Nicholas and Megan Taylor; one sister, June and Palmer Anderson; three brothers-in-law, Glen Rilling, Harold Erickson and Arthur and Evelyn Erickson; one sister-in-law, Leona Roher; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.

Grant Barth was preceded in death by his parents; his sister Rosemar Rilling; and son, Otis.
