Arnold Thompson

Arnold Thompson, 86, of Decorah, died Thursday, Nov. 18, 1999, at the Cresco Care Center, following a short illness.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Nov. 20, at 10:30 a.m., at Glenwood Lutheran Church, rural Decorah, with the Rev. Susan Debner officiating.

Alan Sensor was the organist. Soloist Hub Christen sang "In the Garden" and "Hvide Store Hvide Flok." The congregation sang "Amazing Grace" and "How Great Thou Art."

Casket bearers were Dave Hanson, Doug Hanson, Darryl Hanson, John Loven, Gary Smorstad and Vernon Olson.

Arnold L. Thompson was born Nov. 16, 1913, the son of John and Amelia (Blum) Thompson of Winneshiek County.

He was baptized Jan. 1, 1914, at the Methodist Church in Decorah, and confirmed Oct. 7, 1928, at Stavanger Lutheran of rural Ossian. He had been a member of Glenwood Lutheran since 1971. He attended country school.

On June 26, 1937, Arnold was married to Esther Kraby at Cresco. They became the parents of a daughter, Betty.

Arnold worked in Milwaukee for a short time and moved to Decorah in 1949. Then they moved to Marion and Arnold worked as a cement contractor.

After a move back to Decorah, he worked for Patz sales doing concrete work. Most recently, he enjoyed helping at Smorstad's Garage in Glenwood Township of Winneshiek County.

He enjoyed playing cards and visiting.

Survivors include his wife, Esther; daughter Betty and Jim Hanson of Decorah; three grandsons, Dave and Carol Hanson, Doug and Diane Han son, and Darryl and Karla Hanson, all of Decorah; 10 great-grandchildren: Amanda, Mitchell, Chad, Jessica, Jon, Sara, Rebecca, Karla, Megan and Cody; and two sisters, Marie and Howard Peterson of Decorah, and Helen Rilling of Hillsboro, Ore.

Arnold was preceded in death by his parents and five brothers, Leonard, Nathan, Bill, Raymond and Lester.
