Howard Viste

Howard Viste, 82, of Decorah, died Thursday, May 24, 2001 at Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital in Decorah.

Funeral services were held Monday, May 28 at 3 p.m. at Washington Prairie Lutheran Church, with Rev. Kim Smith officiating.

Organist was Paul Bruvold. Congregational hymns included "Children of the Heavenly Father," "My Hope is Built on Nothing Less" and "Amazing
Grace."

Pallbearers were Wayne Clement, David Johnson, Paul Johnson, Robert Ruen, Anton Stegen and Dennis Wall.

Honorary Pallbearers were Harlan Amundsen, Harold Aschim, Andrew Bakke, Norman Borseth, Jay Clasen, Robert Clasen, John Estrem, Paul Estrem, Kenneth Groth, John Hegg, Gordon James, Howard Johnson and Willard Orvella.

Burial was at Washington Prairie Lutheran Cemetery.

Fjelstul Funeral Home of Decorah handled arrangements.

Howard John Viste was born Feb. 26, 1919 at home in Frankville Township to John and Helena (Clement) Viste.

He was baptized March 30, 1919 and confirmed June 3, 1934 at Washington Prairie Lutheran Church.

Howard Viste attended Bakke Country School and then attended Decorah High School, where he played football and baseball.

He married Inez Peterson Jan. 30, 1943 at Washington Prairie Lutheran Church.

Howard Viste took over his family's farm in Frankville Township at the age of 17, due to his father's death.

He farmed for many years until 1996, when he sold the farm, retired and moved to Decorah.

He was honored by the Farm Bureau for over 50 years of membership, and was also a member of Lutheran Brotherhood and treasurer of the Bakke School for several years.

He enjoyed farming, livestock, horses and fishing. He also was a truck driver, a semi driver and a carpenter.

Howard Viste also enjoyed his family and all of his friends. He was a member of Washington Prairie Lutheran Church, where he had served as a trustee.

He had lived in Green Lea Manor in Mabel, Minn., for one year and for the last two years, he had been a resident of Oneota Riverview Care Facility in Decorah.

Survivors include his, wife, Inez Viste; one daughter, Joan and Terry Stone of Decorah; a daughter-in-law, Susan Viste of Decorah; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Howard John Viste was preceded in death by his parents, John and Helena Viste; one son, James Viste on Dec. 29, 1999; one grandson, Nathan Halverson on Jan. 12, 1993; two brothers, Olaf and Clem Viste and two sisters, Elsie James and Elizabeth Estrem.
