Andrew Elsbernd

Andrew Elsbernd, 74, of Fort Atkinson, died Thursday, June 10, 1999, at his home following a lengthy illness of myelofibrosis.

Funeral services were held Monday June 14, at 11 a.m., at St. John's Catholic Church in Fort Atkinson, with the Rev. David Beckman officiating.

Mary Dietzenbach was the organist. The St. John's choir provided music. Sister Mary Elsbernd was the lector. Mass servers were Daniel Stee, Bryan Beckman and Timothy Beckman.

Casket bearers were Martin Myers, Anthony Kruse, Lonnie Lansing, Denis Lansing, Roger Nolte and Melvin, Elsbernd.

Burial was at the church cemetery. The Chekal Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Andrew William was born Oct. 3, 1924, at Fort Atkinson, the son of Anton and Rosalia (Timp) Elsbernd. He was raised on his parent's farm east of Fort Atkinson. He attended St. John's Parochial School.

He was united in marriage with Alice Brincks Aug. 25, 1954, at St. John's Catholic Church in Fort Atkinson.

They farmed east of Fort Atkinson until 1980, when they moved into town, and their son Gene took over the farm. Andrew continued to come out to help until 1998.

He was a lifelong member of St. John's Catholic Church and was a director for St. John's Cemetery from 1977 until recently. He served many years as a member of the Board of Directors for the Farmers Coop.

He was the youth director for St. Joseph's Court of the Catholic Order of Foresters, later becoming the court's Chief Ranger. He was presently the treasurer for the Northeast Iowa District of the C.O.F.

Survivors include his wife, Alice; four children, Ivan and Barb Elsbernd, Gene and Ann Elsbernd, Mike Elsbernd, and Irene Smith, all of Fort Atkinson; nine grandchildren; three brothers, Leo of Ossian, Wilfrid of Fort Atkinson and Serenus of Fort Atkinson; and three sisters, Marie Setter of Fort Atkinson, Rose Lansing of Elgin, Darlene Lansing of New Hampton and Alice Myers of Waucoma.

Andrew was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Edward, in infancy; and a sister, Rita Nolte.
