Mathilda Martha Barta
Mathilda Martha Barta, 86, of Fort Atkinson, died Friday, Aug. 27, at Aase Haugen Nursing Home in Decorah after a long illness.
A funeral mass was held Tuesday, Aug. 31, at 11 a.m., at St. John's Catholic Church in Fort Atkinson. The Rev. Allen Schmitt officiated.
The mass was concelebrated by Rev. Robert Amemt and Rev. Art McCann.
Rita Smith was the organist. The congregation and the St. John's choir provided music.
Lectors were Dorothy Skretta and Merlin Barta. Presenting offertory gifts were Geralyn Heidt, Kyle Heidt and Becky Bink.
Pallbearers were Greg Barta, Mike Barta, Daren Barta, Andy Skretta, George Backes and Tim Bink, Jr.
Interment was in the St. John's cemetery. The Chekal Funeral Home handled arrangements.
Mathilda Backes Barta was born Aug. 26, 1913, in St. Lucas, the daughter of Joseph and Anna (Herold) Backes. She attended St. Luke's parochial school in St. Lucas for eight years.
On Sept. 26, 1932, she married Cyril Barta at St. Luke's Catholic Church in St. Lucas. They had seven children.
Mathilda was a homemaker and lived in the Fort Atkinson area all of her married life.
She was a member of St. John's Catholic Church in Fort Atkinson, and was active in choir and the St. John's Ladies' Guild.
Survivors include three sons, Robert and Ingrid Barta of Seattle, Wash.; Eugene and Joyce Barta of Fort Atkinson; and Merlin and Shirley Barta of Sterling, IL.; and three daughters, Dorothy Skretta of Des Moines; Bernadette and Tim Bink of Port Washington, Wis.; and Geralyn and Paul Heidt of Humboldt.
Also surviving are two sisters, Lucy Massman of Festina; and Florence Herold of St. Michael, Minn.; and 16 grandchildren and seven greatgrandchildren.
Mathilda Barta was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Cyril, in 1970; one son, Norman, in 1968; four brothers, George Backes, Sr.; Jake Backes; Leo Backes; and William Backes; and five sisters, Mayme Moser; Rose Wagner; Kathryn Rothmeyer; Nellie Stiles; and Anna Massman.
