Gerhard Setter

Gerhard Setter, 88, of Fort Atkinson died Thursday, June 21, 2001 at Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital in Decorah.

A Mass of Christian Burial service was held Monday, June 25 at 10:30 a.m. at St. John's Catholic Church in Fort Atkinson with Rev. John Moser officiating.

Organist Rita Schmitt and the St. John's Choir provided music.

Casket bearers were Donald Blong, Gerald Kruse, Gary Lundtvedt, Gary Wiest, Daniel Neuzil and Dale Lundtvedt.

Interment was in St. John's Cemetery in Fort Atkinson with arrangements by Chekal Funeral Home of Fort Atkinson.

Gerhard Joseph Setter was born on a farm near St. Lucas to Otto and Anna (Kleinekemper) Setter Nov. 12, 1912.

He attended school in Adams, Minn., and St. Luke's in St. Lucas.

Gerhard Setter married Marie Elsbernd June 7, 1939 at St. John's Catholic Church in Fort Atkinson.

They farmed for 30 years and then moved to Fort Atkinson April 1, 1970. He mowed lawn for the Winneshiek County Conservation Commission for a few years. He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church and the Catholic order of Foresters in Fort Atkinson.

He liked going fishing and playing cards, and he especially enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Marie Setter of Fort Atkinson; five daughters: Margaret and Arnold Lundtvedt of Caledonia, Minn.; Agnes and Anthony Kruse of Fort Atkinson; Verna and Harold Lee of Decorah; Ruth and Kenneth Funke of Decorah and Ella and Wesley Smith of Kenosha, Wis; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and one sister, Mary Rethamel of New Hampton.

Gerhard Joseph Setter was preceded in death by his parents; his great-grandson Korbin Lundtvedt; three brothers, Ferdinand, Aloysius and Joseph Setter and four sisters: Elizabeth Blong, Katherine Setter, Cecilia Mitchell and Colette Pagni.
