Charlene Schmitt

Charlene Schmitt, 68, of Calmar, died Saturday, May 12, 2001 at the Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, Wis., following a lengthy illness.

A Mass of Christian Burial service will be held today, Tuesday, May 15 at 11 a.m. at St. John's Catholic Church in Fort Atkinson, with Rev. John Moser and Rev. Donald Schmitt officiating.

Lectors will be Carole Burke and Dana Urigerer. Mass servers will be Matthew, Brian and Sam Schmitt, and offertory gifts will be provided by Diane, Mary, Isaac and Kurt.

Music will be provided by organist Rita Schmitt and the St. John's Choir.

Casket bearers are Chris Schmitt, Dennis Barloon, Chris Meyer, Peter Meyer, William (Jay) Burke, Ralph Meyer and Stephen Meyer.

Interment will be in St. John's Catholic Cemetery in Fort Atkinson. French and Balik Funeral Home of Decorah is handling arrangements.

Charlene Elizabeth (Meyer) Schmitt was born Jan. 17, 1933 to Daniel and Laura (Vsetecka) Meyer in rural Fort Atkinson.

She received her baptism, First Communion and Confirmation at St. John's Catholic Church in Fort Atkinson. She graduated from Fort Atkinson High School, and was happily married to Richard Schmitt Jan. 24, 1953 at St. John's Catholic Church.

She was the mother of seven children: Diane, Richard Jr., Loren, Daniel, Dan and Mary and later adopted Steve.

Charlene had a passion for quilting, embroidery, kolache baking and family gatherings. She was a 4-H leader in the 1960s and 1970s, and a circle leader in the 1990s. She farmed her whole life, the last 48 years with her husband and
her children. She also worked many years at Bucheit Produce in Calmar.

Survivors include her husband, Richard Schmitt of Calmar; two daughters, Diane and David Ungerer of Hawkeye and Mary Schmitt of Calmar; four sons: Richard Schmitt, Jr., of New Lenox, Illinois.; Loren Schmitt and Theresa Lou of Calmar; Dan Schmitt of Fort Atkinson and Steve Schmitt of Fort Atkinson; her mother, Laura Meyer of Fort Atkinson; one sister, Carole and William Burke of Waucoma; six brothers, John Dale and Delores Meyer of Calmar; Robert and Charlotte Ann Meyer of Lawler; William and Janette Meyer of Fort Atkinson; James and Janice Meyer of Fort Atkinson; Daniel and Jeannie Meyer of Garden Grove, Calif., and Peter and Marge Meyer of Denver, Colo., and six grandchildren.

Charlene Elizabeth (Meyer) Schmitt was preceded in death by her father, Daniel Meyer; her son, Daniel Schmitt; a sister, Virginia Cloninger and other members of the Meyer family.

Preceding her in death were a son, Daniel Schmitt; her father, Daniel A. Meyer; a sister, Virginia Cloninger.
