Elsie Anna Hughes

Elsie Hughes, 98, of Postville, died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 1999, at the Good Samaritan Center in Postville.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Oct. 21, at 11 a.m., at the Frankville Community Presbyterian Church with the Rev. James Walker officiating.

Marian Laterman was the organist with special music by Ronald Meyer, soloist.

Casket bearers were her grandchildren. Burial was at the Frankville Cemetery. The Schutte Funeral Service of Postville handled arrangements.

Elsie Anna (Linderbaum) Hughes was born Aug. 13, 1901, in Bloomfield Township of Winneshiek County, north of Postville, one of 12 children of Charles and Alma (Pleister) Linderbaum.

She was baptized Oct. 10, 1901 in SL Paul Lutheran Church at Postville. Elsie attend the Moneek Country School, which was northeast of Castalia.

On April 14, 1920, she was married to Elmer Otto Hughes at the home of her grandparents at Decorah. To this union two children were born.

They farmed in the Castalia and Postville areas. After her husband died, Elsie moved to an apartment in Ossian where she lived until 1989, when she became a resident at the Good Samaritan Center in Postville.

Elsie was a person who enjoyed work, including the farm chores, as well as the garden and her flowers. She canned the fruits and vegetables she raised, putting them on shelves in the basement to feed her family and for guests who stopped by to visit.

She milked the cows, raised geese, chickens and ducks and still had time to cook and bake, sew and make quilts, and spend time with her family. She was considered a gracious hostess and liked to share.

Elsie was a member of the Frankville Community Presbyterian Church and was active in the women's organization, UPW, the KEWS, and the Historical Society in Castalia.

Surviving are her children, Evart and Lilah Hughes of McGregor, and Darlene and Byron Schultz of Postville (Frankville); nine grandchildren, Linda Schoening and husband Bruce, Donna Gross and husband Regie, Ronald Hughes and wife Linda, Rick Hughes and wife, Patti, Kent Schultz and wife Donna, Randy Schultz, Chris Schultz and wife, Robin Kimberly Deering and husband Charles, and Shannon Schultz and wife Lisa.

Also surviving are three brothers, Arthur and Freida Linderbaum of Ossian, Laurence and Evelyn Linderbaum of Monona, and Charlie and Marian Linderbaum of Castalia; and two sisters, Alma Burreson of Decorah, and Jennie and Ed Clement of Decorah.

There are 25 great-grandchildren: Bobby, Jessica and Mitchell Schultz; Logan and Katie Schultz; Brett aid BreAnn Schultz; Kelsie, Tanner, Whitney and Morgan Deering; Chase, Marshall, Zach and Rourke Schultz; Brent Schoening; Travis Hughes and wife Dawn; Toby Hughes; Kari Hughes; Tonia (Bodensteiner) aid husband Eric Courtney; Clint Bodensteiner and wife Misty; Erick Bodensteiner, Tory Hughes; Tappi Hughes; and Trista Hughes.

There also are six great-greatgrandchildren: Breanna, Alex and Dylan Courtney, Brett and Hailey Bodensteiner; and MacKenzie Hughes.

Elsie Hughes was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Otto, who died in 1984; two sisters, Lydia Cook and Clara Cutting; and four brothers, Carl, Walter, Edward aid Earl Linderbaum.
