Helen J. McConaughay
Helen J. McConaughay, 87, a resident of Crestview Acres Care Center in Marion and formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, March 3, 1999, in the care center following a long illness.
Funeral services were held Saturday, March 6, at 1 p.m., at the First Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Kay Slocum officiating.
Burial was at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. The Cedar Memorial Funeral Home handled arrangements.
Helen (Spilde) McConaughay was born June 15, 1911, in Decorah, the daughter of Henry and Hannah (Gjetley) Spilde.
She married Charles McConaughay Feb. 9, 1942, in Kahoka, Mo. He died in 1953.
She was a food service manager for Prairie High School for 26 years and a member of First Lutheran Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Char and Kenneth Marsh of Cedar Rapids, and Jennie and Mike Strohman of Omaha, Neb.; a son, Dennis and Clarice McConaughay of Charlotte, N.C.; three brothers, Gavin Spilde and Harold Spilde, both of Decorah; and Orville Spilde of West Liberty; two sisters, Gladys Borsheim of Decorah and Bessie Huesby of Willmar, Minn.; four grandchildren; and two greatgrandchildren.
Helen McConaughay was preceded in death by three brothers, Leonard, Lester and Myron.
