Mathilda Hauer

Mathilda Hauer, 87, of Calmar, died Thursday, Jan. 28, 1999, at St. Joseph Community Hospital in New Hampton after a short illness.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 2, at 11 a.m., at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar, with the Rev. Donald Hawes and the Rev. Robert Hirsch officiating.

Alan Sensor was the organist. Soloist Dan Silhacek and the St. Aloysius adult choir provided vocal music.

Casket bearers were grandsons Brady, Chase, Patrick, Shane, Jamie and Mason Riehle.

Burial was at the church cemetery. The French Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Mathilda Olivia (Beer) Hauer was born Dec. 24, 1911, in Ossian, the daughter of Joseph and Caroline (Holder) Beer. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Ossian.

Mathilda attended De Sales Parochial School in Ossian and graduated from Ossian High School. She went to Upper Iowa and received a certificate to teach country school, teaching at Military Township No. 7 for seven years, at which time it closed.

Mathilda was married to Hugo Hauer Sept. 14, 1936, at St. Francis de Sales Church in Ossian.

She lived in the Ossian and Calmar area all her life. Mathilda worked at the Calmar Creamery and was librarian at the Calmar Library for 14 years.
She was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar and its Rosary Society.

Survivors include four children, Marilyn Bina of Arlington Heights Illinois, Jeanette and Melvin Heit of New Hampton, Carol and Roger Riehle of Spillville, and Darrel and Theresa Hauer of Albert Lea, Minn.; 17 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Mathilda Hauer was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Hugo, who died in 1969; a son, Michael, in infancy; three brothers, Louis, Jerome and Raymond Beer; and six sisters, Olivia Halverson, Dorothy Cremer, Georgina Cremer, Jeanette Beer, Caroline Ratliff and Margaret Beer.
