Vivian John Soukup

Vivian Soukup, 81, of Spillville, died Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2000, at the Cresco Care Center after a long illness.

A funeral mass was held Saturday, Aug. 26, at 11 a.m., at the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville, with the Rev. Donald Hawes
officiating.

Doris Thompson was the organist. Casket bearers were Jim Balik, Bob Clausen, Stanley Shevik, Dave Mashek, Howard Taylor and Marvin Soukup Sr.

Interment was at the St. Wenceslaus Cemetery in Spillville. The Balik Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Vivian John Soukup was born June 28, 1919, on the family farm near Protivin, the son of Joseph and Albina (Pecinovsky) Soukup. He attended country school.

On Aug. 27, 1940, he married Lucille Barloon at the Assumption Catholic Church at Little Turkey. To this union two daughters were born, Elaine and Carol.

Vivian farmed near Jackson Junction until 1953, when he moved to Spillville and worked as a mechanic at the Allis Chalmers and John Deere stores in Fort Atkinson, retiring in 1981.

He also was the Spillville policeman for 18 years. During his retirement he did mechanic work for many area farmers, did lawn work for people in town and had a large garden.

Survivors include his daughters, Elaine and Alvin Spence of Rudolph, Ohio, and Carol Phillips and fiance Roger Hardy of Palo; one brother, Cyril and Lena Soukup of Ingram, Texas; and one sister, Evelyn and Harry Bearman of New Hampton; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Vivian Soukup was preceded in death by his parents and by his wife, Lucille, who died in 1995.
