Louis "Louie" Alois Kalec

Louis Kalec, 98, of Spillville, died Thursday, April 6, 2000, at the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah.

A funeral mass was held Monday, April 10, at 11 a.m., at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville, with the Rev. Donald Hawes officiating.

Doris Thompson was the organist. Dan Silhacek was the soloist.

Casket bearers were Erv Ott, Jack Zoulek, Danny Swehla, Stan Shevik, Bill Wermers and Howard Taylor.

Interment was at the St. Wenceslaus Cemetery in Spillville. The Balik Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Louis "Louie" Alois Kalec was born June 10, 1901, at Spillville, the son of Frank and Barbara (Poshusta) Kalec. He attended St. Wenceslaus Schools.

On Oct. 5, 1927, he was married to Clara Wagner at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin. They celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary last fall.

The couple had three children: Dorothy, Richard and Raymond.

Early in his life, Louie worked on the county bridge crew as a cook. He then farmed near Ridgeway and later, east of Spillville.

His last job was Star Route driver for the United States Post Office, a job he had for 30 years.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing and baseball. His favorite team was any team that could beat the Yankees.

Louie moved to the Aase Haugen Home in 1990.

Survivors include his wife, Clara, at the Aase Haugen Home; one daughter, Dorothy and Robert Walters of Mason City; two sons, Richard and Etsuko Kalec of Palm Bay, Fla., and Raymond and Judy Kalec of Calmar; 13 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.

Louis Kalec was preceded in death by his parents; one granddaughter, Karen Walters; three sisters, Mary Hruska, Barbara Frana and Anna Kalec; and one brother, Joseph Kalec.
