Mildred Leona Silhacek

Mildred Silhacek, 77, of Spillville, died Saturday, Aug. 7, 1999, at the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse, Wis., after complications from heart surgery. She had been ill four months.

A funeral mass was held Wednesday, Aug. 11, at 11 a.m., at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville, with the Rev. Donald Hawes officiating.

Doris Thompson was the organist. Soloists were Samia Thompson and Alia Tarraf, with special music by Fusion.

The offertory was received by Robert Kuboushek, Christine Rausch, Matthew Silhacek and Joseph Silhacek.

Servers were John and Michael Silhacek. Lectors were John Engel and Salah Tarraf.

Casket bearers were Clark Gerleman, Tom Kuboushek, Larry Hauber, Haley Silhacek, Jimmy Fisher, Donna Mracek, Zach Tarraf and Kim Engel.

Honorary bearers were members of Catholic Workman Branch No. 33 of Spillville.

Burial was at the church cemetery. The Balik Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Mildred Leona (Kuboushek) Silhacek was born Jan. 10, 1922, at Conover, the daughter of Albert and Christina (Luzum) Kuboushek.

She was married to Edward Silhacek Sept. 27, 1943, at St. Wenceslaus Church in Spillville.

Mildred spent more than 25 years as a cook and manager of the Red Vest in Calmar. She greatly enjoyed cooking, baking and gardening, along with spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Mildred was Catholic in faith, a member of St. Wenceslaus Church, the St. Wenceslaus Guild and the Catholic Workman.

Survivors include five children, Edward J. Silhacek of Newport Beach, Calif., Jane E. and Salah Tarraf of Minnetonka, Minn., Kathryn and John M. Engel of Minnetrista,: Minn., Daniel and Gwen Silhacek of Spillville, and Robert J. and Marsha Silhacek of Delano, Minn.

There are 10 grandchildren, Kimberly Engel, Samia (Tarraf) Thompson, Alie Tarraf, Zachary Tarraf, Haley and Jon Silhacek, and Michael, Matthew, Joseph and Christina Silhacek; as well as one sister, Christine Rausch of Fort Atkinson; and one brother, Robert Kuboushek of Calmar.

Mildred Silhacek was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edward, who died in 1993; one brother, Raymond Kuboushek; and sisters Wilma Gerleman, Viola Meyer and Marcella Schmitt.
