Durwin Sanderson

Durwin Sanderson, 74, of Decorah, died Friday, July 16, 1999, at the Aase Haugen Home.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 20, at 2 p.m., at the Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah, with the Rev. James Dale officiating.

The Rev. Kristen Kvamme will be the organist. The congregation will sing "In the Garden," "On Eagle's Wings" and "Amazing Grace."

Casket bearers will be Kenneth Bergan, Frederic Carlson, Dick Headington, Roy Piper, Charles Rooney and Tom Stahr. Honorary bearers will be Dr. Kevin Locke and Dr. David Wright.

Burial will be at the Bluffton Cemetery. There will be full military rites by Helof-Holm V.F.W. Post No. 1977 and Bematz-Symonds American Legion Post No. 163. The Fjelstul Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Durwin D. Sanderson was born Nov. 12, 1924, in Decorah, the son of John and Ella (Emery) Sanderson. He attended Decorah High School.

He was in the United States Navy and served in the South Pacific during World War II.

Durwin was united in marriage with Marjorie Limbeck Aug. 24, 1952, at the First Lutheran parsonage.

He worked for Horace Brickner, then he ran a Dolly Madison Ice Cream route. Following that, he worked for Carlson's for almost 30 years as a heavy equipment operator, retiring in 1989.

Durwin was a lifetime member of the Helof-Holm V.F.W. Post No. 1977.

He enjoyed gardening, yard work, and washing and polishing his car.

Survivors include his wife, Marjorie; two children, Keith Sanderson of Decorah and Karen Sanderson of St. Arisgar, four grandchildren, Shannon Noe and Miranda Noe of Decorah, and Justin Gates and Christopher Gates of St. Ansgar; and one great-grandchild, Dakota Michael Casper.

Durwin Sanderson was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Everett, Jerome and Franklin; and one sister, Marilyn Knight.
