Joseph Levi Hagensick
Joseph Levi Hagensick, 93, of Decorah, died Wednesday, April 5, 2000, at the Aase Haugen Home.
Funeral services were held Friday, April 7, at 11 a.m., at the First United Methodist Church in Decorah, with the Rev. James Dale and the Rev. O. Paul Hougen officiating.
The organist was the Rev. Kristen Kvamme. Congregational hymns were "What A Friend We Have in Jesus" and "How Great Thou Art."
Casket bearers were Rick Hagensick, Rodney Hagensick, Rusty Hagensick, David McConnell, Regan McConnell and Rick Shares.
Interment was at the Oakland Cemetery in Waukon. The Fjelstul Funeral Home handled arrangements.
Joseph was born May 4, 1906 in Monona, the son of Frank Hagensick and Ida (Alt) Hagensick. He was educated in the rural schools of Clayton County.
On Nov. 14, 1928, he married Lois C. Bacon at McGregor United Methodist Church in McGregor.
He worked for the railroad, on the section crew, in Marquette. In 1930, they moved to Waukon and started farming. They moved to Waterville in 1940 and to Castalia in 1949 and kept on farming.
In 1966, Joseph had a farm sale and moved to Decorah, where he did carpenter work for Sverre Svenson Co. of Decorah. Then he worked for Black Hawk Construction, helping build a dormitory and the library at Luther College.
In 1970 he worked for Roth Construction, helping build the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital. In 1972 Joseph had a heart attack and had to retire.
He had been a resident at the Aase Haugen Home since April 24, 1997.
Joseph was a member of First United Methodist Church in Decorah and a longtime member of the Farm Bureau. He enjoyed playing cards and wood
working.Survivors include his wife, Lois of Decorah; one son, John "Jack" and Sally Hagensick of Castalia; five grandchildren, Rick and Charlene Hagensick of Waukon, Barbara and Rick Shares of Readlyn, Brenda and Dave McConnell of Decorah, Rodney Hagensick of Waukon, and Rusty and Deb Hagensick of Castalia; 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.
Also surviving are a sister-in-law, Catherine Hagensick of Lebanon, Ind. and several nieces and nephews.
Joseph Hagensick was preceded in death by his parents; seven brothers, John, Richard, Leo, Raymond, Marvin, Edward and Roy and two sisters, Grace Snook and Josephine Hagensick in infancy.
