Maria (Marie) Elsa Elizabeth (Schnuelle) Ihde was born Jan. 2, 1909, near Postville in Allamakee County, the daughter of Simon and Elizabeth (Heins) Schnuelle.
She was baptized May 13, 1909, and confirmed Sept. 2, 1923, at St. Paul Lutheran in Postville. Marie attended school in and near Postville and after she received her education, she went to Milwaukee, Wis., to be a nanny.
On Sept. 10, 1930, she was united in marriage to Elmer William Ihde at Zion Lutheran Church, Castalia, by the Rev. G. A. Schmidt. Two children were born to this union, Arthur and Arietha.
Marie helped her husband do the farming in the Ossian-Castalia area up until his death. She remained on the farm after his death until she went to live with her son, Arthur, near West Union. She lived there until entering the Aase Haugen Home in May of this year.
Marie liked sewing, gardening, raising flowers, visiting and doing things for her children and grandchildren. She was a "special" mom to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
At one time, she was active in church circles. Marie had a great devotion to Zion Lutheran Church and was a member for almost 70 years.
Survivors include two children, Arietha Riha of Ossian; Arthur and Vivian Ihde of West Union; eight grandchildren, Janet Riha, John Riha Jr.; Sharon Riha and Ronald Riha; Carolyn Ihde, Mark Ihde, Bonnie Anderson and Nancy Englehardt; and five great-grandchildren, Jason, Shawn, and Sam Ihde, and Drew and Tonya Anderson.
