Hazel Throne

Hazel Throne, 88, formerly of Emmons, Minn., died Monday, Aug. 14, 2000, at the Oneota Riverview Care Facility in Decorah.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Aug. 17, at 11 a.m., at the Emmons Lutheran Church in Emmons, with the Rev. Bernard Daiker officiating.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church. The Mittelstadt Funeral Home of Lake Mills will handle arrangements. Burial will be at the Oak Lawn Cemetery in Emmons, Minn.

Hazel (Larson) Throne was born June 26, 1912, in Polk County of Minnesota, on a farm near Fertile, Minn., the daughter of Ludvig and Emma (Juelson) Larson.

She attended country school and graduated from teachers training in Mclntosh, Minn.

She married C. Martin Throne Aug. 20, 1933, in Mclntosh, then moved to Emmons, Minn. Hazel taught country school for many years, plus she took courses at Mankato (Minn.) State College.

At age 48, she decided to go back to school and while she was teaching, she received her bachelor of science degree from Winona (Minn.) State College in 1968.

Hazel enjoyed handiwork, playing bridge and being outdoors before her health changed. She enjoyed winters in Florida and summers in Minnesota, and time with her family and friends.

She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Preston, Minn. Hazel also was a member of the Minnesota Education Association and the Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority. She taught at country schools in Polk, Freeborn and Fillmore counties in Minnesota and she taught at the Preston, Minn., elementary school before retiring in 1977. The highlight of her teaching career was being nominated for Minnesota Teacher of the Year in 1976. In her later years she taught remedial reading, which she really enjoyed.

Survivors include four children and their spouses: Lois and John Duff of Alva, Fla., Richard and Karen Throne of Scarville, Iowa, Marlene and Robert Sorenson of Decorah, and Audrey and Jim Whitney of Alva, Fla.; 14 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; one brother, Arnold and Dagmar Larson of Fertile, Minn.; and two sisters, Helen Gunderson and Mabel Hanson, both of Fertile, Minn.

Hazel Throne was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Martin, who died Oct. 15, 1984; one grandson, Lynn Curtis Whitney; one sister, Bertha Laurin; and four brothers, Harold William who died in infancy, Lloyd and Joseph Larson.
