Ruth E. Held

Ruth E. Held, 90, of Decorah, died Thursday, Aug. 24, 2000, at the Barthell Eastern Star Nursing Home in Decorah following a long illness.

Memorial services were held Sunday, Aug. 27, at noon, at First Lutheran Church in Decorah with the Rev. Thomas Miller officiating.

The Rev. Marion Miller was the organist. Congregational hymns were "Lift High the Cross", "Lord Take My Hand" and "O Day Full of Grace".

Inurnment was at the Lincoln Memorial Cemetery in Milwaukee, Wis. The Fjelstul Funeral Home of Decorah handled arrangements

Ruth Elizabeth (Neumeyer) Held was born July 5, 1910, in Milwaukee, the daughter of William and Pauline (Knueppel) Neumeyer.

After high school graduation, she was a secretary and bookkeeper for the AO Smith Corp.

She married Wilmer 0. Held Sept. 14, 1940.

As a member of Resurrection Lutheran Church in Milwaukee, Wis., and Bay Shore Lutheran Church in Whitefish Bay, Wis., she was a tireless volunteer. She taught Sunday school, worked in the kitchen, was a circle member, a lifelong Bible student and faithful worshipper. She taught nursery school from the age of 55 to 75, demonstrating her life long love of children.

Ruth traveled extensively in Asia, Europe, Africa, South American and Australia, enjoying a wonderful retirement with her husband.

Survivors include her daughter, Edith and Steven Jacobsen of Decorah; and two grandsons, Peter of Troy, Mich., and Karl of Oshkosh, Wis.

Ruth Held was preceded in death by her husband Wilmer, her husband of 56 years, who died Jan. 26, 1997.
