Gary Dean Suhr
Gary Suhr, 56, of rural Decorah, died Friday, Dec. 22, 2000 at his home after a battle with cancer.
There was no visitation. In respect for his wishes, his body was cremated. The family held a celebration of his life service at the Fjelstul Funeral Home on Tuesday, Dec. 26 at 7 p.m.
Gary Dean Suhr was born Sept. 20, 1944 in Oelwein, the son of Paul and Elsie (Jipson) Suhr.
He graduated from Arlington High School, and on April 10, 1965, he married Elaine Wilson.
Gary Suhr farmed in Arlington until Dec. 1, 1977, when he purchased a farm in Decorah. He farmed and milked until June 1996, when he sold the dairy herd. He also worked for a year on the floor crew at Luther College. His battle with cancer started in Dec. 1996. He fought hard and was an inspiration to his family.
Gary Suhr loved golfing and especially winning the Gemini Golf Tournament in July with his three sons.
He loved his family and grandchildren, and will be missed immensely.
Survivors include his wife, Elaine Suhr of Decorah; three sons, Jeffrey and Amy Suhr of Waukon; Matthew and Jen Suhr of Altoona and Greg Suhr of Decorah and a daughter, Julie and John Laughlin of The Plains, Ohio; additional survivors include six sisters: Ruth and Roderic Kamper of Volga, Iowa; Ester and Lyle Wilson of Dyersville, Iowa; JoAnn and Dick Hughson
of Maynard; Nancy and Richard Buhmann of Randalia, Iowa; Mary and Terry Henderson of Arlington, Iowa and Donna and Mike Buhmann of Fayette, and six brothers: Arnold and Luella Suhr of Arlington; Donald and Beverly Suhr of Homewood, Illinois; Paul Suhr, of Arlington; Dale and Margaret Suhr of Calmar; Robert Suhr of Spring Green, Wisc.; and Duane and Mary Suhr of Ankeny.Also surviving are six grandchildren: Nathan, Brad, Daniel, Abby, Alane and Meredith.
Gary Dean Suhr was preceded in death by his parents.
