Norman "Vernon" Rasmussen

Norman Rasmussen, 77, of rural Mabel, Minn,, died Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001 at the Green Lea Manor Nursing Home in Mabel.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 23 at Hesper Lutheran Church in Hesper, with Rev. Hans Floan officiating.

Burial was in the Hesper Lutheran Cemetery, with Mengis Funeral Home handling arrangements.

Norman "Vernon" Rasmussen was born July 10, 1923 in Winneshiek County to Jens and Stella (Rosendahl) Rasmussen.

On Oct. 22, 1950 he married Lylas Gjetley in Newton, Iowa. The couple had farmed near Hesper since 1956.

Vernon was a member of the Hesper Lutheran Church and enjoyed his grandchildren and working on the farm.

Surviving Vernon Rasmussen are his wife, Lylas Rasmussen of Hesper; three daughters: Sharon and Gary Hanson of Spring Grove, Minn.; Sheila and Tom Norby of Canton, Minn.; and Carol and Gordon Gaustad of Decorah; three sons: Alan and Kris Rasmussen of Decorah; Dean Rasmussen and Craig and Joan Rasmussen, all of Mabel; 11 grandchildren; six greatgrandchildren; two brothers, Ray and Grace Rasmussen and Ervin and Arlene Rasmussen, all of Decorah; and two sisters, Mae and Norman Brynaas and Selma and Russell Nelson, all of Decorah.

Norman "Vernon" Rasmussen was preceded in death by a daughter, Joan Fay Whalen; his parents; two brothers and two sisters.
