Ellen H. Martinson
Ellen Martinson, 93, of Forest City, Iowa, died Wednesday, March 7, 2001.
Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City with Rev. Lee Laaveg officiating.
Soloist was Margie, Markusen, and organist was Leonard Markusen.
Musical selections included "My Heart Is Longing," "Abide With Me," "Borning Cry," and "Beautiful Savior".
Casket bearers were Dale Carson, Randy Martinson, Mark Richardson, Tim Thurston, Jack Frans, Reg Martinson, Dick Welp, Rory Martinson and Ricky Martinson.
Honorary casket bearers were Nancy Welp, Melanie Richardson, Joyce Martinson, Pat Thurston, Rhonda Frans, Katie Martinson, Carrie Carson, Betty Martinson and Donna Martinson.
Interment was in Oakland Cemetery in Forest City, with Petersen Funeral Home of Forest City handling arrangements.
Ellen H. Martinson was born Dec. 9, 1907 in Decorah, the daughter of Crist and Julianna (Brown) Hildahl.
She received her education in Decorah, and after graduating from high school, worked in a bank for a short time.
On March 21, 1929, she married Myron Martinson in Decorah.
The couple made their home in Nordess, Iowa, where they worked for the Nordess Telephone Company for 10 years.
In 1939 they moved to Gladbrook, Iowa, and about two years later, Myron Martinson was transferred to Forest City by Central Iowa Telephone Company.
Ellen Martinson worked as a bookkeeper for several area businesses including Olson Furniture, Stokey Carpeting, the Forest City Canning Factory, Joe Westby Insurance, and served as treasurer of the United Fund, and also did some tax work with Albert Erdahl.
She became a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in 1948, and served as a Sunday School teacher, Ladies Aid president and was active in Circle.
She was a talented seamstress who enjoyed quilting, knitting, crocheting and tatting.An avid reader, Ellen Martinson was also a wonderful cook and dedicated gardener until just a couple of years ago. She liked to can her garden produce and bake goodies with the raspberries she grew.
She treasured time spent with her family.
Surviving Ellen Martinson are a son, Dale and Adeline Martinson, of Radcliffe, Iowa; two daughters, Chick and Jack Thurston of Forest City and Mary Ann and Ken Evans of Albert Lea, Minn.; nine grandchildren; 21 greatgrandchildren; a brother-in-law, Albert Peterson of Decorah; two sisters-in-law, Mary Wolf of Eau Claire, Wisc., and Mary Martinson of Decorah.
Ellen H. Martinson was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Myron Martinson and two sisters.
