Grace Knox

Grace Knox, 89, died at the Colonial Manor in Elma Monday, Jan. 25, 1999.

Her body was donated to the University Hospitals in Iowa City for research purposes. There will be no visitation and a memorial mass will be held at a later date.

The Conway Funeral Home of Elma is in charge of arrangements.

Grace was born in Winneshiek County Nov. 11, 1909, the daughter of Thomas E. and Mary (Cashman) Knox.

She attended country school and graduated from Decorah High School in 1927. Grace later received her bachelor of science degree at Oklahoma State University and a master's degree from the University of Iowa.

She completed additional studies in the field of microbiology at the University of Chicago.

Grace joined the Women's Army Corps and after her discharge, she was employed as a microbiologist in research at the University of Chicago, Northwestern University, and Veterans Hospital in Iowa City.

She retired from the Veterans Hospital in 1983 and moved to Elma, where she lived until her death.

Survivors include three sisters, Regina (Mrs. Leo) Broghammer of Decorah, Mildred (Mrs. E. J.) Drew of Elma, and Genevieve (Mrs. P. A.) Palmersheim of Des Moines.

Grace Knox was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Vera (Mrs. Orin) Gilbertson, Geraldine (Mrs. Dee) Bell, and Marcella Knox; and one brother, Thomas Knox.

Grace Knox

A memorial mass will be offered for Grace Knox of Elma Aug. 14, at 4 p.m., at the Immaculate Conception Church at Elma.

Grace died Jan. 25, 1999, and her body was donated to the University of Iowa for research. Burial of the cremains will be in Calvary Cemetery in Elma.

Grace is survived by three sisters, Regina (Mrs. Leo Broghammer) of Decorah, Mildred (Mrs. Emmett Drew) of Elma, and Genevieve (Mrs. Peter Palmersheim) of Des Moines, as well as nieces and nephews.

A gathering of relatives and friends will follow the services in the church hall.
