Pheobe Amalia Headington
Pheobe Headington, 105, of Decorah, died Friday, Feb. 2, 2001 at Oneota Riverview Care Facility.
Funeral services were held Monday Feb. 5 at 11 a.m., at Decorah Lutheran Church, with Rev. Ole Winter and Rev. Bryan Robertson officiating.
Casket bearers were Mark Headington, Paul James Haugen, Lance Haugen, Darrell Frey, Harvey Houck, and La Moyne Thompson.
Organist was Kathy Murray, and soloist Rev. Hans Floan sang "Den Store Hvide Flok". The congregation sang "How Great Thou Art" and "In The Garden".
Honorary casket bearers were Larry Headington, Steve Headington, Marilyn Selig, Rosalyn Samuelson, Mary Jane Pawley, Virginia Payne, Nicole Headington, Kylene Haugen, Cory Selig, Rachel Selig, Laura Selig, Reece Samuelson, Riley Samuelson, Robin Cruz, Lynn Kondash, and N. J. Pawley.
Burial was at Phelps Cemetery, with Fjelstul Funeral Home handling arrangements.
Pheobe Amalia Headington was born July 5, 1895 to Sam and Annie (Bakkemoen) Sorenson in Decorah Township, Winneshiek County.
She was baptized and confirmed at Decorah Lutheran Church, where she was a life-long member. She was a part of the Freeport Mission Circle.
She attended rural schools of Winneshiek County, and married James Allen Headington Oct. 29, 1919 at Decorah Lutheran Parsonage.
Pheobe Headington loved nature and flowers, and liked to pick wildflowers and wild berries. She enjoyed walking, which she contributed to her long life. She collected doll, liked to travel and enjoyed coffee parties. A homemaker, she was known for making gooseberry jelly.
Her family thought it was amazing she had lived in three different centuries.
Pheobe Headington had been a resident of Oneota Riverview Care Facility since Feb. 14, 1994.
Surviving Pheobe Headington are a son, Milo and Florence Headington of Decorah; a step-daughter, Nora Sharp of Decorah; four grandchildren, Larry and Dianne Headington of Mabel, Minn.; Steve Headington of Ossian; Marilyn and George Selig of Maxwell, Iowa; and Rosalyn and Rusty Samuelson of Decorah; two step-grandchildren, Mary Jane and Newt Pawley of Cody, Wyo,; and Virginia Payne of Powell, Wyo.; 10 great-grandchildren: Nicole Headington, Mark Headington, Paul James Haugen; Lance Haugen; Kylene Haugen, Cory Selig, Rachel Selig, Laura Selig, Reece Samuelson and Riley Samuelson; and three step-great-grandchildren: Robin Cruz, Lynn Kondash and N. J. Pawley.
Pheobe Amalia Headington was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James Allen Headington, on Sept. 3, 1966; one step-son, James Benjamin Headington; three step-daughters, Maythel Headington, Pheobe Hensel and Gayle Hartley; one brother, Hans Sorenson; and six sisters: Mabel Headington, Judith Stortz, Stella Sorenson, Leona Thompson, Lillie Hamre and Wilma Moellerman.
