Harold Dehning

Harold L. Dehning, 82, of Decorah, died Saturday, Dec. 18, 1999, at the Eastern Star Nursing Home in Decorah, following a lengthy illness.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 21, at 11 a.m., at First Lutheran Church in Decorah, with the Rev. Marian Miller officiating.

Alan Sensor was the organist. Music included "Amazing Grace," "How Great Thou Art" and "O Come, O Come, Immanuel."

Casket bearers were Aaron Dehning, Don Dehning, Greg Dehning, John Dehning, Paul Slaymaker and Dean Frana.

Honorary bearers were Maria Frana, Lori Slaymaker, Pam Dehning, Sheila Dehning, and Dan and Teresa White.

Burial was at the Phelps Cemetery. The French & Balik Funeral Home handled arrangements, which included an I.O.O.F. service.

Harold was born Feb. 26, 1917, near Decorah, the son of Alfred and Clara (Olson) Dehning. He attended country schools and married Eleanor Easton March 10, 1938, in Hesper.

He farmed until 1966, when he moved to Decorah. Then Harold worked as a carpenter for several years for various contractors in Decorah.

After Eleanor's death in 1984, Harold married Marjorie Peterson Jan. 26, 1985, at the First Lutheran Church in Decorah.

He was a member of First Lutheran Church and the I.O.O.F. Lodge. Harold enjoyed traveling and camping.

Survivors include his wife, Marjorie; three sons, Harlon and Karen Dehning of Marengo, Duane and Nancy Dehning of Decorah, and Ronald and Kathy Dehning of Decorah; seven grandchildren, Lori and Paul Slaymaker, Greg and Sheila Dehning, Don and Pam Dehning, Maria and Dean Frana, Aaron Dehning and special friend Jamie, Teresa and Dan White, and Jon Dehning; nine greatgrandchildren, Danny, Adam, Shaun, Katelyn, Tyler, Dalton, Crystal, Kailynda and Jordyn; two step-daughters, Sondra Peterson of Decorah, and Shirleen and Doug Sturtz of Decorah; one step-son, Mark and Jeanne Peterson of Hiawatha; and eight step-grandchildren, Brian Sturtz, Michael and Janel Sturtz, Terry Sturtz and Jennifer Sturtz, Eric Oakley and
Jonathan Oakley, and Jeff Peterson and Heather Peterson.

Harold Denning was preceded in death by his parents; and his first wife, Eleanor, in 1984.
