Leona Brynsaas

Leona Brynsaas, 89, of Decorah, died Sunday, June 13, 1999, at the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah after a short illness.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 16, at 11 a.m., at Decorah Lutheran Church. Officiating were the Revs. James Glesne, Tim Tostengard, Ole Winter and 0. Paul Hougen.

Diane Kvamme was the organist. Hymns included "Beneath the Cross of Jesus," "Just As I Am" and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus."

Casket bearers were David Ramsey, Ronald Ramsey, Dean Hagen, Jack Borseth, Raymond Steele, Paul Rauter and Donald Brandt

Interment was at Phelps Cemetery in Decorah. The French & Balik Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Leona Gertrude (Borseth) Brynsaas was born Feb. 14, 1910, in Burr Oak Township, rural Winneshiek County, the daughter of Ed and Ora (Steele) Borseth.

She was baptized by the Methodist pastor in Burr Oak July 3, 1910, and confirmed her faith May 11, 1927, at Decorah Lutheran Church.

Leona attended the Rocksvold School in Glenwood Township. She studied and worked as a seamstress in Decorah after graduating from eighth grade.

On Nov. 12, 1930, she was united in marriage with Edwin Brynsaas at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

Leona was a housewife most of her life, but also worked at Ronnie's Cafe, Frederick's Restaurant and Vi's Cafe, all in Decorah.

Leona was active in church work, helping to begin the Mission Circle in the Freeport area for Decorah Lutheran Church and she taught Sunday School. She was a seamstress and treasurer for her circle at Glenwood Lutheran Church and helped make many quilts for Lutheran World Relief.

In August of 1998, Leona became a resident at the Aase Haugen Home.

Survivors include four children, LaVerne and Raymond Ramsey of Burr Oak, Marion Brynsaas of Decorah, Roger Brynsaas and Lucille James of Edmond, Okla., and Wesley and Susan Brynsaas of Algona; seven grandchildren, Rosalyn Ramsey, Ronald Ramsey, Beverly Nelson, David Ramsey, Tlisa and Daniel Girlamo, Carrie and Brett Barglof, and Amy Brynsaas; six great-grandchildren, Rachel and Ryan Ramsey, Bennett and Brenten Barglof, Christopher Girlamo and Jasmine Haley; one sister, Norma Brandt; and one brother, Melvin and Helen Borseth.

Leona Brynsaas was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edwin, who died Aug. 6, 1995; a son, Ronald in infancy; three sisters, Mildred Helgeson, Viola Skaim and Ruby Borseth, who died in infancy; and one brother, Durward Borseth.
