Bernice Werner

Bernice Werner, 94, of Calmar and formerly of Ossian, died Saturday, March 24, 2001 at the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital in Decorah following a short illness.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 27 at 11 a.m. at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Ossian, with the Rev. Msgr, Cletus Hawes officiating.

Burial was in the church cemetery with French Funeral Home of Calmar handling arrangements.

Bernice Dessel Werner was born Jan. 18, 1907, the daughter of Andrew and Catherine (Cremer) Dessel.

She attended De Sales School in Ossian and graduated from Immaculate Conception Academy in Dubuque in 1924.

She married Edward C. Werner May 13, 1940 at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church. To this union one daughter, Catherine, was born.

Bernice Werner worked at the Ossian State Bank and the Iowa State Bank for the Figge family for over 60 years and retired as director emeritus.

She was a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic parish and was the church organist for over 45 years.

Survivors include one daughter, Catherine Vance of Calmar and a granddaughter, Carolyn Vance of Ames.

Bernice (Dessel) Werner was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; two sisters and a son-in-law, John Vance.
