Joseph Lechtenberg
Joseph Lechtenberg, 93, of Ossian, died Friday, Feb. 9, 2001 at the Ossian Senior Hospice.
Funeral Mass was held Monday, Feb. 12 at 1 p.m. at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Ossian, with Msgr. Cletus Hawes officiating.
Organist was Diane Stee, and special music was provided by Silver Memories and congregational singing.
Readers were Sr. Carol Hemesath, Patty Lien and Jason Lechtenberg.
Mass servers were Garret Lechtenberg, Shauna Lechtenberg and Leah Lechtenberg.
Gift carriers were James Lechtenberg, Kay Canaday, Joyce Gerleman and Mary Jenks.
Pallbearers were Ron Lechtenberg, Mike Lechtenberg, David Lechtenberg, Grant Gerleman, Greg Jenks, Gary Lechtenberg, Steve Lechtenberg, Warren Gerleman and Chad Canaday.
Honorary Pallbearers were Francis Wenthold, Harold Jacobson, Rick Gunderson, Bernie Sadler, Art Linderbaum, Cletus Brincks and Eddie Bohr.
Interment was in St. Francis Cemetery in Ossian. Schmitz Funeral Home of Ossian handled arrangements.
Joseph Louis Lechtenberg was born Nov. 4, 1907, the son of Herman and Catherine (Uhlenhake) Lechtenberg in Washington Township, Winneshiek County, near Festina.
He was baptized Nov. 5, 1907 and confirmed in his faith at Our Lady of Seven Dolars Catholic Church and attended St. Mary's School in Festina.
On Oct. 21, 1930 he was united in marriage to Caroline Schissel in Rochester, Minn. Six children were blessed to this union: James, Mark, Duane, Kay, Joyce and Mary.
After their marriage, they set up farming near Ossian and raised their family.
Joseph Lechtenberg was a member of St. Francis de Sales Parish and its Rosary Society, Farm Bureau, Saddle Club and the Knights of Columbus. His hobbies included playing cards, fishing and horses.
Surviving Joseph Lechtenberg are his wife, Caroline Lechtenberg; four children, James and Edna Lechtenberg of Postville; Kay and Bill Canaday of Arvada, Colo.; Joyce and Clark Gerleman of Mundelein, IL; Mary and Joseph Jenks of Roswell, Ga.; and two daughters-in-law, Mary Lechtenberg of Ossian and Jeanne Lechtenberg-Hageman of Decorah.
Also surviving are 19 grandchildren: Ron and Jackie Lechtenberg; Gary and Theresa Lechtenberg; Diane Lechtenberg; Nancy Lechtenberg; Lisa and Nick Radloff; Mike and Lori Lechtenberg; Patty and Gary Lien; Steven and Judy Lechtenberg; Linda and Keith Hemesath; David and Valerie Lechtenberg; Lori and Brian Shindelar; Julie and Rick Kipp; Sarah and Doug Groux; Kelli and David Swisher; Warren Gerleman; Grant and Kate Gerleman; Cheryl Canaday; Chad Canaday and Greg Jenks; a granddaughter-in-law, Jane Lechtenberg-Rude; and 40 great grandchildren.
Additional survivors include four sisters, Julia and Andrew Hemesath of Calmar; Odelia and Leander Cremer of Calmar; Catherine and Arthur Huber of Lawler; and Rita and Linus Bodensteiner of New Hampton; a brother-in-law, Augustine Holthaus of Ossian; two sisters-in-law, Hildegard Schissel of Ossian and Marie Schissel of Ossian; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Joseph Louis Lechtenberg was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Duane Lechtenberg and Mark Lechtenberg; a grandson, Joe W. Lechtenberg; three brothers: Iraneus Lechtenberg as a young boy; Theodore Lechtenberg; and Gregory and Elizabeth Lechtenberg; three sisters: Bridget Lechtenberg; Joe and Edwina Thuente, Sr.; and John and Bertha Thuente; and brothers and sisters-in-law Joe and Gertrude Schissel; Ray Schissel; Paul and Eleanor Scheidel; Merle Schissel and Ethel Holthaus.
