Olivia Holthaus

Olivia Holthaus, 77, of Decorah, died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001 at the Aase Haugen Home.

Funeral Mass was held Friday, Feb. 9 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Ossian, with Msgr. Cletus Hawes officiating.

Organist was Diane Stee, and music was provided by the St. Francis Adult Choir and the congregation.

Readers were Debbie Lechtenberg, Holly Holthaus and Kelly Holthaus.

Pallbearers were Douglas Bushman, Darrin Bushman, Kory Holthaus, Kyle Holthaus, Josh Holthaus and Matt Holthaus.

Honorary Pallbearers were David Bushman and Daniel Bushman.

Gift carriers were Kayla Holthaus, Jill Holthaus, Megan Holthaus and Darcy Bushman.

Interment was at St. Francis Cemetery in Ossian, with Schmitz Funeral Home of Ossian handling arrangements.

Olivia Susan Holthaus was born March 29, 1923, the daughter of Herman and Pauline (Weber) Brincks in Military Township, Winneshiek County.

She was baptized by the Rev. M. J. Thiltgen on March 31, 1923, and was confirmed in her faith at St. Francis de Sales Church Dec. 16, 1939 by the Most Rev. F. J. Beckman.

She attended rural school and then De Sales School.

On Sept. 28, 1943, she was united in marriage to Ralph Holthaus of Festina in the St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church. The Rt. Rev. Msgr. M. J. Thiltgen performed the ceremony.

Six children were blessed to this union: Dorothy, Kenneth, Tom, Duane, Jane and Mary. After their marriage, the couple set up farming near Ossian, with Olivia Holthaus helping with farm work and raising her devoted family.

She was a lifetime member of St. Francis de Sales Parish and its Rosary Society.

Her hobbies included crocheting, gardening, doing word search puzzles and traveling. She loved visiting and being visited by her children and grandchildren.

Surviving Olivia Holthaus are her husband, Ralph Holthaus; three sons, Kenneth and Karen Holthaus of Decorah; Tim and Kris Ann Holthaus of Postville; and Duane and Beth Holthaus of Ossian; and two daughters, Dorothy and Donald Bushman of Calmar and Jane and Rodney Dotzler of Ridgeway.

Additional survivors include 15 grandchildren: Douglas, Darrin, David and Daniel Bushman; Debbie Lechtenberg; Darcy Bushman; Kory, Kyle, Kelly and Kayla Holthaus; Josh and Matt Holthaus; Jill, Holly and Megan Holthaus; eight great-grandchildren: Gary, Matthew, Hayley, Bailey, Jada, and Savannah Bushman and Dakota and Brooke Holthaus; two brothers, Clarence and Marie Brincks of Ossian and Ray and Hildegard Brincks of Fort Atkinson; and two sisters, Anna and Francis Hageman of Calmar and Mary Bullerman of Ossian.

Olivia Susan Holthaus was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Mary; a great-grandson, Richard Bushman; and two sisters, Rose Meyer and Theresa Bullerman.

Interment was in St. Francis Cemetery, Ossian. Casket bearers were Douglas Bushman, Darrin Bushman, Kory Holthaus, Kyle Holthaus, Josh Holthaus and Matt Holthaus. Honorary pallbearers were David Bushman and Daniel Bushman.
Visitation was Thursday, Feb. 8 from 3 to 9 p.m. with a Parish Scripture Service at 7
pm. at Schmitz Funeral Home, Ossian and also from 9:30 a.m. to mass time on Friday, Feb. 9.
