Alvin Martin Steffen

Alvin Steffen, 74, of Decorah, died Saturday, Nov. 18, 2000 at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in LaCrosse.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 21 at Decorah Lutheran Church. The Rev. James Glesne and the Rev. Ole Winter officiated. Organist was Kathy Murry. The congregation sang "Rock of Ages," "Softly and Tenderly," "Savior, Like A Shepherd Lead Us" and "Oh, Take My Hand, Dear Father".

Burial was at the Freeport Cemetery. Pallbearers were Norman R. Larson, Melvin Macal, Marvin Martin, Elmer Sorenson, Allen Taylor and Ervin Yahr Jr. Fjelstul Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Alvin Martin Steffen was born March 16, 1926, the son of Martin and Anna (Busche) Steffen of Climbing Hill, Iowa. He was baptized at Wolf Creek, Iowa and confirmed at St. John Lutheran in Climbing Hill. He attended Climbing Hill School system.

On Sept. 7, 1948, Alvin and Margaret Plagge were united in marriage in Mapleton, Iowa. To this union five children were born. Alvin farmed near Anthon, Iowa and then went to work for Fred Carlson Co. in 1957, where he worked until retiring. Alvin was a member of Decorah Lutheran Church.

Alvin is survived by his wife Margaret of Decorah; four children, Connie and Ray Knight of Humboldt, Iowa, Calvin and Jane Steffen, Mark and Wanda Steffen, and David and Lori Steffen, all of Decorah; nine grandchildren: Lori, Jeffery, David, Zachary, Bridget, Courtney, Dallas, Dustin and Cole; three great grandchildren: Nate, Zach and Austin; and one sister, Clara Thompson of Sioux City.

Alvin Martin Steffen was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Timothy, who died March 22, 1983 and a brother, Walter Steffen.
