Gregory Leander Uhlenhake

Gregory Leander Uhlenhake,78, died Friday, Nov. 17, 2000, at Ossian Senior Hospice in Ossian of an apparent heart attack.

A Funeral Mass was held Wed., Nov. 22 at 11 a.m. at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Ossian. Msgr. Cletus J. Hawes, Msgr. Leander Reicks and Rev. Vincent Simon officiated. Organist was Diane Stee, and special music was provided by Silver Memories, accompanied by Irmgard Ellingson and Nikki Justis. Also taking part were the St. Francis Adult Choir.

Casket bearers were Jackie Justis, Tasha Simeon, Nikki Justis, Angela Hvitved, Aaron Hvitved, Katie Justis, Brooks Schmitt, Storm Schmitt and John Justis.

Readers were Angela Hvitved, Aaron Hvitved, John Justis, Jackie Justis, Brianna Byers, Brooks Schmitt, Storm Schmitt and Katie Justis.

Interment was at St. Francis Cemetery. Arrangements were handled by Schmitz Funeral Home of Ossian.

Greg Uhlenhake was born on Feb. 5, 1922, the son of Theodore W. and Christine (Geling) Uhlenhake of rural Ossian. He was baptized on Feb. 5, 1922 by the Rev. M. J. Thiltgen, D.D. His first Communion Day was May 25, 1930. He was confirmed on Dec. 16, 1939 by the Most Rev. F. J. L. Beckman at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, and obtained his education at De Sales School.

On Oct. 1, 1945, Greg Uhlenhake was united in marriage to Alma Anne Huber at Our Lady of Mt. Camel Catholic Church at Lawler by Father Delay, They established their home on their farm on the east side of Ossian and raised a family of eight children. A lifetime member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church and its Rosary Society, Greg Uhlenhake was also a member of the Winneshiek County Farm Bureau. He was engaged in dairy and hog farming with his son, Joe. He received enjoyment from his family and grandchildren and also from fishing and hunting. He was also an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs, and enjoyed telephone conversations with many friends.

Survivors include two sons, Joseph Uhlenhake of Ossian and Brian Uhlenhake and Michelle of Melbourne, Australia, and four daughters: Joyce Justis of Burnsville, Minn.; Connie and Linn Hvitved of Cresco; Mary Lynn and Dan Schmitt of Sumner and Barbara and Michael Byers of Inver Grove Heights, Minn.

Also surviving are 14 grandchildren: Tasha and Mark Simeon of Myrtle Beach, Calif.; Nikkie Justis of Boston, Mass; Pfc. John Justis of USMC stationed on Okinawa; Jackie Justis of Grand Forks, N.D.; Katie Justis of River Falls, Wisc.; Angela Hvitved, of Ames; Aaron Hvitved of Cedar Falls; Brooks Schmitt of Lake Forest, IL.; Storm Schmitt and Mitchell Schmitt, both of Sumner; Brianna Beyers and Michaela Byers, both of Inver Grove Heights; Kyle Uhlenhake and Jon Uhlenhake of Melbourne, Australia; a great-grandson, Mark Thomas Simeon, Jr., of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; a brother, Cletus Uhlenhake and Mildred of Ossian; a sister, Seraphina Uhlenhake of Ossian; a sister-in-law, Florence Uhlenhake of Ossian; a brother-in-law, Art Huber and Catherine of Lawler; 4 sisters-in-law: Phyllis Lechtenberg of Festina; Lorraine Fischer of West Union; Ethel Mae and Kenneth Schneberger of Alta Vista and Hilda Huber of New Hampton.

Gregory Leander Uhlenhake was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Alma on May 13, 2000, a son, Craig Uhlenhake on April 12, 1977; a daughter, Carol Uhlenhake on June 20, 1957; a brother, Alva Uhlenhake; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Marie and Leo Wenthold, and another brother-in-law, Henry Huber.
