Gladys L. Hancer

Gladys L. Hancer, 92, of Decorah, died Thursday, Aug. 24, 2000, at the Barthell Eastern Star Home in Decorah.

Services were held Monday, Aug. 8, at 10 a.m., at the First United Methodist Church in Decorah, with the Rev. James Dale officiating.

The Rev. Kristen Kvamme was the organist. Soloist Cheryl Adam sang 'Borning Cry'. The congregation sang, "Hymn of Promise" and "God of Love and God of Power".

Burial was at 3:30 p.m. Monday, at the Evergreen Cemetery in Grand Mound, with the Rev. William Steward presiding.

The Fjelstul Funeral Home of Decorah handled arrangements.

Gladys (Lichtenstein) Hancer was born Dec. 22, 1907, in Grand Meadow, Iowa, the daughter of Ernest and Lillian (Smith) Lichtenstein.

She graduated from Grand Mound High School and from Cornell College in Mount Vernon, where Gladys was Phi Beta Kappa.

She married Alvin F. Hancer Aug. 15, 1932, at the home of her parents in Grand Mound.

Gladys and Al were teachers at the Postville Schools, where they met. They moved to Decorah, where Al was a teacher and coach and Gladys was a homemaker.

From 1942-82, Al and Gladys managed the pro shop and club house at Oneota Golf & Country Club.

Gladys was a member of First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, P.E.O., Stitch & Chatter Club and Travel Club.

She had been a resident of the Barthell Eastern Star Home since July 10, 1992.

Survivors include two nieces, Ann Burshtan of Kettering, Ohio, and Joan Joyce of Wayne, Pa., and two nephews, the Rev. William Steward of Des Moines and David Steward of Springfield, IL.

Gladys Hancer was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Al, who died Sept. 9, 1992; one sister, Blanche Steward; and one brother, Vernon Lichtenstein.
