Raymond Carey

Raymond (Rev.) George Carey, 78, of Ossian, died Friday, Sept. 8, 2000, at the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital in Decorah after a short illness.

A funeral mass was held Monday, Sept. 11, at 11 a.m., at the St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Ossian, with the Rev. Msgr. Cletus Hawes officiating.

Al Sensor was the organist. Sue Lienau was the soloist. There also was congregational singing. Eileen Courtney was the lector.

Dolly Panos, Pat Carey and Robyn Dundee were gift carriers. Dolly Panos also was the eucharistic minister.

Casket bearers were Melvin Leuenberger, Robert Reilly, Donald Kipp, Willard Holini, Greg Wenthold and Ed Meyer.

Performing military rites and in honorary attendance were members of the Brockman-Hammersland American-Legion Post No. 503.

Interment was at the St. Francis Cemetery. The Schmitz Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Ray was born Aug. 19, 1922, in Chicago, IL, the son of James Robert Carey Sr. and Eva Marie (Gleisner) Carey. He made his First Communion at St. Francis de Sales Church in Ossian and received his education at De Sales School.

On May 23, 1942, he was united in marriage to Patricia R. Atkins of Rock Island, IL, at Kahoka, Mo. To their union a daughter was born. They resided in Moline, IL, at that time.

Ray entered the United States Army during World War II and served his country from Feb. 16, 1943, until his honorable discharge Aug. 11, 1944.

During his Army career, his rank was Technician 5th Grade with Army specialties of expert gunner, truck driver and power generator operator.

Following his discharge in 1944, Ray was employed at the J. I. Case factory in Moline, IL. Through the 1950s, he worked at Riverside Foundry in Los Angeles, Calif.

Ray returned to Iowa in the late 1950s and worked for his brother, Bob Carey, at Carey's Station in Ossian. In the early 1960s, he owned and operated the Idle Hour Tavern (Staska's) in Ossian.

For 20 years, from 1966 through 1985, he was employed by Reilly Construction Inc. of Ossian. Ray (Rev.) was a member of the Brockman-Hammersland American Legion Post No. 503 of Ossian. He was an avid fan of the Cubs baseball team and enjoyed watching auto racing, playing cards and traveling.

After his retirement, one of Ray's favorite pastimes was to drive the main street back and forth, and then park his pickup under a tree to watch the everyday traffic.

Survivors include a daughter, Joetta Carey of Davenport; a granddaughter, Amy Machalek of Davenport; two grandsons, Marcus Machalek and Scott Machalek, both of Davenport; and two great-grandsons, Joshua and Nevan of Davenport.

Also surviving are two nephews, Clifford and Pat Carey of Decorah, and Keith and Lisa Carey of West Union; two nieces, Dolly and Dave Panos of Decorah, and Robyn Dundee of Ossian; nine great-nieces and nephews; and four cousins, Alvin Huether of Ossian, Lois Holden of Davenport, Bill Gleisner of Hampton and Jean Ann Mason of Waukon.

Raymond Carey was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Patricia; his brother, James Robert (Bob) Carey Jr., who died Dec. 7, 1977; a sister-in-law, Elizabeth (Betty) Carey, who died Aug. 1, 1998; a niece, Emma Lou Carey, who died Oct. 11, 1960; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
