Regina Ethel Mahoney

Regina Ethel Mahoney, 77, of Waukon, died Wednesday June 21, 2000 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon following a brief illness.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 24. at 11 a.m., at St. John the Baptist West Ridge Catholic Church in rural Waukon, with the Rev. Vincent Simon and the Rev. Msgr. Cletus Hawes officiating.

Casket bearers were Don Nierling, Dan Nierling, Jerry Nierling, Maynard Johnson, Lennie Mellick, D. M. Ryan, Michael Collins and Dennis Bakken.

Burial was at the church cemetery. The Martin Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Regina (Mellick) Mahoney was born Nov. 29, 1992(sic), in Union Prairie Township of Allamakee County, on the rural Waukon farm of her parents, Michael and Julia (Duffy) Mellick.

She was baptized and confirmed at St. John the Baptist West Ridge Catholic Church and attended Union Prairie No. 2 rural school. Following school, she did housekeeping for area families and helped take care of her mother.

On Nov. 26, 1940, she married Edward M. Mahoney at the West Ridge Church. She and Ed farmed and raised their family together in Union Prairie Township until his death June 14, 1983.

Regina also worked as a nurse's aid for many years, first at Northgate Care Center in Waukon and later at Oneota Care Facility in Decorah.

She was a devoted member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Waukon in recent years. She enjoyed raising a big garden and took pride in keeping her home neat and comfortably inviting to family members and friends who liked to stop in for her breads, jams and canned goods. She particularly enjoyed going to family events and celebrations.

Survivors include four sons, Michael Mahoney, Patrick Mahoney, and Lyle and Marilyn Mahoney, all of Waukon, and John Mahoney of Madison, Wis.; two daughters, Mary Jean and Larry Svendsen, and Bernadine and Tom Gander, both of Ossian; 15 grand children; six great-grandchildren; three sisters, Rosella Nierling of Cedar Rapids, and Loretta Collins and Marcella and Milbourn Johnson, both of Waukon; and two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Kenneth Welch of Waukon and Sister Lauraine Mahoney of Dubuque.

Regina Mahoney was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Edward; four sisters, Margaret Howes, Rita Nierling, Mary Ryan and Pearl Weber; and four brothers, Donald, Frank, Leonard and Leo Mellick.
