Mary Frances Thuente
Mary Frances Thuente, 94, of Ossian, died Sunday, June 25, 2000, at the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital in Decorah.
A funeral mass was held Wednesday, June 28, at 11 a.m., at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Ossian, with the Rev. Msgr. Cletus Hawes officiating.
Diane Stee was the organist. Music was provided by the St. Francis de Sales adult choir and congregational singing. Lectors were Dan Thuente and Mike Thuente. Bridget Thuente was the Eucharistic minister. The children were gift carriers. The Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court No. 983 was in honorary attendance.
Mary's nephews were casket bearers. Interment was at the church cemetery. The Schmitz Funeral Home handled arrangements.
Mary (Lansing) Thuente was born March 26, 1906, in rural Military Township, Ossian, Winneshiek County. She was the daughter of William F. and Regina (Huber) Lansing.
She was baptized March 28, 1906, at St. Francis de Sales by the Rev. C. B. Lechtenberg. She received her First Holy Communion May 3, 1914.
Mary was confirmed Oct. 15, 1919, by the Most Rev. James Keane. She obtained her education at St. Francis de Sales Catholic School.
At the age of 19, Mary became a charter member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court No. 983.
On Oct. 3, 1938, she was united in marriage with Frank W. Thuente at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, with the Rt. Rev. Msgr. M. J. Thiltgen officiating. The couple established their home in Ossian and to this union 4 children were born.
Mary was active through the years, volunteering in De Sales School library and at the church as one of Good Housekeepers. She was employed as a cook at the De Sales School lunches for many years, after which she assisted in the care of her mother, Regina.
A lifetime member of St. Francis Sales Catholic Church, Mary was an honorary member of its Rosary Society and an honorary and charter member the Catholic Daughters of the American Court No. 983-Ossian.
She was an avid gardener and home canned the produce it provided. Her hobbies included quilting, crocheting, tatting and sewing.
Survivors include three sons, Albert and Martha Thuente of Long Beach, Calif., Gerald Thuente of Cranston, R. I. and David and Mary Helen Thuente of Fort Wayne, Ind.; and one daughter Elizabeth and David Bowman of Chicago.
Also surviving are five grandchildren: Gregory (Terri) Thuente, Mary Helen (Jim) Uht, Julie (Mark) Willett, Daniel (Bridget) Thuente and Michael Thuente; three great- grandchildren, Thomas Willett, Anna Willett and Grant Thuente; one brother Wilfred and Victoria Lansing of Ossian; and several nieces and nephews.
Mary Thuente was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Frank,who died in 1946; one sister, Cyrilla M????* and two brothers, George Lansing and Leo Lansing.
Memorials may be given to St. Francis de Sales Church.
