Alma Uhlenhake
Alma Anne Uhlenhake, 80, of Ossian, died Saturday, May 13, 2000, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minn., of an apparent heart attack.
A funeral mass was held Tuesday, May 16, at 10:30 a.m., at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Ossian. Officiating were the Rev. Msgr. Cletus Hawes, the Rev. Msgr. Leander Reicks and the Rev. Vincent Simon.
Diane Stee was the organist. Special music was by Silver Memories. There was also singing by the St. Francis adult choir and the congregation. Readers were Aaron Hvitved, Angela Hvitved, Brianna Byers and Brooks Schmitt. Gift carriers were Mitchell Schmitt, Brianna Byers, Michaela Byers, Kyle Uhlenhake and Jon Uhlenhake.
Casket bearers were Angela Hvitved, Aaron Hvitved, Brooks Schmitt, Katie Justis, Martin Fisher, Larry Lechtenberg, John Schneberger, Jerome Uhlenhake and Merle Wenthold.
Honorary bearers were Tasha Simeon, Nikki Justis, Jackie Justis, John Justis, Storm Schmitt, Mitchell Schmitt, Brianna Byers, Michaela Byers, Kyle Uhlenhake and Jon Uhlenhake.
Interment was at the St. Francis Cemetery in Ossian. The Schmitz Funeral Home handled arrangements.
Alma (Huber) Uhlenhake was born Feb. 2, 1920, the daughter of Alphonse and Elizabeth (Reicks) Huber, in rural St. Lucas. She was baptized at St. Luke's Catholic Church in St. Lucas and attended school there until fourth grade. She moved with her parents and siblings to Lawler, where she was confirmed in her faith at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church.
Alma continued her education in the Lawler schools and graduated from Lawler High School in 1937. After graduation, Alma attended college at Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, where she received her teaching certificate.
She taught in country schools of Chickasaw, Bremer and Winneshiek counties for six years.
On Oct. 1, 1945, she was united in marriage to Gregory Leander Uhlenhake at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Lawler by the Rev. Delay. They made their home on the a farm on the east edge of Ossian and raised their family of eight children.
Alma lived there until her health began to fail and then became a resident of the Ossian Senior Hospice March 10, 1998.
She was a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church for 56 years and its Rosary Society. She enjoyed her family, especially her grandchildren.
Alma was well-known for her hospitality and excellent culinary skills. She enjoyed working in her garden, watching birds and discussing politics. The annual reunion at St. Anthony de Padua Church near Festina was a highlight of each year.
Survivors include her husband, Greg Uhlenhake of Ossian; two sons, Joseph Uhlenhake of Ossian, and Brian and Michelle Uhlenhake of Metamora, IL; four daughters, Joyce Justis of Burnsville, Minn., Connie and Linn Hvitved of Cresco, Mary Lynn and Dan Schmitt of Sumner, and Barbara and Michael Byers of Inver Grove Heights, Minn.
Also surviving are 14 grandchildren, Tasha (Mark) Simeon of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Nikki Justis of Boston, Mass., Pfc. John Justis of USMC stationed in Thailand, Jackie Justis of Grand Forks, N.D., Katie Justis of Burnsville, Minn., Angela Hvitved of Ames, Aaron Hvitved of Cedar Falls, Brooks Schmitt of Lake Forest, IL, Storm Schmitt and Mitchell Schmitt, both of Sumner, Brianna Byers and Michaela Byers, both of Inver Grove Heights, Minn. and Kyle Uhlenhake and Jon Uhlenhake, both of Metamora, IL.
Other survivors include one brother, Arthur and Catherine Huber of Lawler; three sisters, Phyllis Lechtenberg of Festina, Lorraine Fisher of West Union and Ethel Mae and Kenneth Schneberger of Alta Vista; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Alma Uhlenhake was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Craig Uhlenhake, who died April 12, 1977; one daughter, Carol Uhlenhake, who died June 20, 1957; one brother, Henry Huber; and one sister, Marie Wenthold.
